Social reaction to Jordan Spieth’s collapse, Danny Willett’s win at the Masters

Heading into Sunday at the Masters, Jordan Spieth looked poised to defend his Augusta title, but …

… anything, and then some.

The 12th hole

Up by five shots heading into the 12th hole, Spieth quadruple bogeyed, with two shots landing in the water before he hit the green. Needless to say, the Twitterverse was in shock:

Then, Danny Willett’s brother took the audience by storm as play rolled on:

Call it a comeback?

When Spieth birdied on Hole 13, some were hoping for a rally:

But, in the end, it was Willett

Willett became the second Englishman to win the Masters since Nick Faldo:

And finally …

The road proved quite different for Jordan Spieth on the second day of the Masters, but the end result was the same: Spieth found himself on top of the leaderboard.

Spieth carded a 2-over, 74 in his second round at Augusta to follow a 6-under, 66 on Thursday. But that over-par round was normal on a day when scores were up more than a stroke on average because of high wind gusts. Spieth, at 4-under, holds a one-shot lead over the field with a few players left on the course.

The players chasing him makeup an interesting grouping. Rory McIlory, at 3-under par, sits in second, with other names like Bryson DeChambeau (an amateur), Danny Lee (-2) and Brandt Snedeker (-1) also in shouting distance of Spieth’s lead.

This will be the sixth straight round Spieth holds the outright lead at the Masters if the lead holds up. Spieth became the first player since Raymond Floyd in 1976 to go wire-to-wire as the leader at the Masters last year. Spieth, who won his first major at the Masters last year, also tied Tiger Woods’ scoring record in the event at 18-under par in 2015.

Spieth, who won a national championship at the University of Texas, is the second-ranked golfer in the world.
