Wells Fargo Championship Faces Sponsorship Change
According to a report from the Charlotte Business Journal, Wells Fargo will no longer be the sponsor of the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, North Carolina. The sponsorship deal is set to end after the 2024 event.
End of an Era for Wells Fargo
Wells Fargo had previously signed a 5-year extension with the PGA Tour in 2019. However, once the 2023 tournament concludes, a new sponsor will be needed for this popular event.
Notable Winners of the Wells Fargo Championship
Since its inception in 2003, the Wells Fargo Championship has seen numerous prestigious winners. Golf legends such as Tiger Woods (2007), Rory McIlroy (2010, 2015, 2021), Vijay Singh (2005), Jim Furyk (2006), Rickie Fowler (2012), Jason Day (2018), and Max Homa (2019, 2022) have all emerged victorious at this tournament.
McIlroy’s win in 2010 and Fowler’s win in 2012 marked significant breakthroughs in their respective careers.
Furthermore, it is worth noting that Wyndham Clark, the defending champion of the Wells Fargo Championship, went on to win the U.S. Open later that summer.
Wells Fargo’s Decision to End Sponsorship
While Wells Fargo expressed a desire to continue their sponsorship, they were not willing to meet the asking price, as stated by Josh Carpenter from the Sports Business Journal.
“Wells Fargo wanted to stay on but was not willing to pay what was being asked,” Carpenter tweeted.
This news comes after Honda announced last November that they would be ending their sponsorship with the PGA Tour after the 2023 season, as reported by Golfweek.
