KAPALUA (Hawaii) — Jon Rahm is getting used to the low scores on Kapalua’s Plantation Course. This is a good start and he hopes it will lead to a better finish at the Sentry Tournament of Champions. Rahm, who was 33-under-par and finished second last year, birdied three of his final four holes to shoot a 9-under 64. He shared the lead with Colin Morikawa (J.J. Spaun) in a beautiful start to the year. Morikawa started the back nine with six consecutive birdies, the longest streak of such on the PGA TOUR. Spaun had four consecutive birdies at the back, his first appearance at Kapalua. The 34 under-winning score last year was a PGA TOUR record, and it was achieved in a week with very little wind. This was true on Thursday at a course that was both firm and played much shorter due to severe slopes, which can cause shots to roll longer on the ground than when they fly in the air. Billy Horschel was not able to break par in the 39-man field. Shooting 76. Xander Schauffele managed to get a 70, while dealing with a back problem that had surfaced for the second consecutive month.
