Sean Covich took on the role of head men’s golf coach at West Virginia nearly a decade ago. At that time, the program was starting from scratch, with no office, players, or practice facilities.
West Virginia’s Journey Back to NCAA Championship
Having last competed in men’s golf in 1982, West Virginia reinstated its golf team in the 2015-16 season under Covich’s leadership. This year marked a significant milestone as the Mountaineers qualified for the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship for the first time in 77 years.
Notre Dame’s Return to Nationals
Similarly, Notre Dame ended a lengthy drought by making it to the NCAA Championship for the first time since 1966. Coach John Handrigan and his team have been overwhelmed by the support and attention following this achievement.
Support and Recognition
Covich and Handrigan have received an outpouring of support from alumni, donors, and the golf community at large. Messages of congratulations from fellow coaches and competitors have highlighted the significance of their teams’ accomplishments.
Embracing the Big Stage
Both West Virginia and Notre Dame faced challenging conditions during the opening round of the championship but showed resilience and determination. With the support of their communities and the golf fraternity, these teams are making their mark on the national stage.
Looking Ahead
As West Virginia and Notre Dame continue their journey at the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship, the coaches and players are focused on making the most of this opportunity. The road back to nationals has been long, but the rewards are plentiful for these historic programs.
