The 2023 Golfweek Senior Division National Championship is now a desert battle.
After a Monday 4 under 68, Gary Albrecht leads by two shots at Desert Willow Golf Club, Palm Desert, California. To leapfrog Robert Funk (18-hole leader), Albrecht carded only one bogey to claim the 36-hole lead.
Funk was able overcome an early round double bogey and closed his scoring with a birdie at No. Funk was able to overcome a double bogey in the early rounds and close his scoring with a birdie on No. 17. He is now 1 under for the tournament. Joe Palmer and he are at 1 under, leading a group of players that is well within striking distance.
Both Leonard Komar and Mark Lindberg are 1 over, and both have just come off sub-par rounds on Monday. Sixth place is held by three more players, five shots behind the leader.
The tournament boasts one of the most deep fields of senior amateur golf. Six players, including 2021 U.S. Senior Low amateur Billy Mitchell are only three over and six shots behind. The championship is still open to anyone with such an elite field.
Craig Hurlbert (2022 Golfweek Challenge Cup Captain) is evicted with a WD. Other notables include Jerry Gunthorpe, Craig Larson (T17), Kevin VandenBerg and Vance Welch.
