Everett Whiten Jr. was a man of no faults.
In the final round, he shot an 8-under-par 64 at Shoal creek in Alabama. This helped Howard to win the 2023 PGA Works Collegiate Championship Men’s Team title. Howard, which is only in its third season, won the tournament by 57 shots, scoring 25-under 835.
Sam Puryear, Howard’s coach, said: “I believe that if you trust the process and prepare well you can achieve things like this.” This is the result of a great deal of hard work and sacrifice. It was a two-day turnaround after our conference championship. There was a lot to do, but everything worked out well.
Whiten’s colleague, Greg Oden Jr. won the low medalist award the two previous years. But Whiten took home the crown this year with 14 under. Oden shot 5 under.
C.M. In the men’s individual competition, Louisville Senior C.M. Mixon birdied his final hole, avoiding a three-man play off and helping him win the title with a score of 2 under.
Texas A&M Corpus-Christi won the team title for the third time in a row, with a final round of 3-under 68. Lucie Charbonnier, a junior, won the individual championship with a final round of 3-under-68. She finished 1 under par for the championship. This was two shots better than her freshman teammate Lucia Ramirez (who shot over) and senior Maria Beltran. Charbonnier has won the PWCC championship twice in a row.
“I wanted my teammate to lose. Charbonnier stated that Charbonnier was a freshmen and she wanted the championship back. “I told Charbonnier we’ll play the best, and the best will win. “Even if I had finished second to her, I’d still have been happy.”
Phu Khine, a senior at North Carolina Wilmington High School, was disappointed when she could not defend her PWCC championship last year. Khine, who won in 2021 but had a shoulder injury to her labrum, was unable to play in 2022.
She returned to the tournament this year, and she stayed in striking distance for the first two rounds. In the final round she followed the same strategy, remaining steady on the back nine of Shoal Creek in order to shoot par.
Allycia Gaan, from Alabama State, struggled to keep up, with triple bogeys at 11 and 12 before she blew her chances on 14. Khine’s score of 3 over 218 beat Charlotte’s Kaiyuree Moodley (also 4 over) and Gan’s (7 over).
Khine stated that “it means a great deal to me to be able to win, but to win PGA WORKS is for minorities, and gives us the chance to bring these people together at this event. It’s an honor for me.”
