St. Thomas made history at Big O Classic.
After three second-place finishes in last year’s competition, the school won its first Division I win in any sport. The school won the 14-team tournament at Indian Creek Golf Course, Nebraska. It shot 1-under 863 and beat host Omaha and Southern Illinois Edwardsville by five strokes.
The Purple finished the final day tied with SIU Edwardsville. Omaha, the host school, was just two shots behind. St. Thomas posted a score of one-over-289. Only two shots were needed to beat the 54-hole score from last year’s school year with the 863 total.
Matthew Raab tied Matthew Raab’s career-best round with a 3-under 69. He was helped by seven birdies and four bogeys. The 54-hole score, 214, was his career best by one stroke. In a field of 93 players, he was fifth overall.
Texas gets North Carolina back on track
Through its two first tournaments in the 2022-23 season, it’s clear that North Carolina didn’t perform up to expectations.
The Tar Heels were able to keep the track in Texas, despite being up against some of the most talented men’s teams in America. North Carolina won the Ben Hogan Collegiate and finished at 15-under 825 for the week. It beat Texas Tech by nine shots. After each round, the Tar Heels won.
North Carolina was able to win a major victory thanks to its three big guns: Austin Greaser, Dylan Menante, and David Ford. At 6 under, the latter, who won this summer’s Western Amateur, was tied for third. Christiaan Maas, a Texas freshman, and Vanderbilt’s Gordon Sargent, won the 2022 NCAA individual title.
Ford tied for sixth at 4 Under, while Menante finished a stroke behind.
Tar Heels beat six top-10 teams to win Ben Hogan Collegiate by nine strokes. Ford, Greaser and Menante are in the top 8, Burnett is 15th, Fountain is 30th as everyone contributes to the team title. This was 11th under DiBitetto/Clark. https://t.co/8h2vX7rr6r#GoHeels #TarHeelTough pic.twitter.com/mJpzfG0cFA
