The 156 players for the PGA Tour’s next designated event in 2023, the Wells Fargo Championship will not be finalized until the evening of Friday, but two special names were announced on Wednesday.
Marcus Byrd, Quinn Riley, and the APGA Tour have accepted sponsorship exemptions to compete in next week’s tournament, May 4-7 at Quail Hole Club, Charlotte, North Carolina.
Byrd is making his third start of the season, after winning the APGA Farmers Insurance Invitational in Torrey Pines and playing at the Genesis Invitational on the Charlie Sifford memorial exemption.
Byrd is a 25 year old graduate of Middle Tennessee State University and three time winner on the APGA Tour. She said, “I am truly honored to be playing in the Wells Fargo Championship and I thank everyone for the opportunity.” “I’m from D.C., and last year I saw the event in Charlotte. It inspired me. And this year I am so grateful to be playing in Charlotte. Wells Fargo is committed to supporting young golfers.
Riley was the top APGA Tour player in 2021-22, and earned an exemption to last year’s John Deere classic. The Duke University graduate will be making his third appearance on Tour at Wells Fargo.
Riley, a Raleigh native, said, “This is a real dream come true. I am extremely grateful to Wells Fargo for giving me this opportunity to compete in a PGA Tour tournament in my home state.” “I’m grateful to Wells Fargo for supporting me at First Tee, where I started my golf career. Now it’s come full circle with the Wells Fargo Championship.”
