Protestors gathered at Oakridge Country Club in Farmington, Utah, earlier this week to confront professional golfer Tony Finau over alleged debts, holding signs with messages such as “Tony Pay Your Debts” and “Tony Pay Your Family Back.”
Dispute Over Money Owed to Investors
Finau has been embroiled in a long-standing dispute with investors who claim he owes them money from his early days as a professional golfer.
Finau arrived at the golf course on Monday morning to find around 12 people at the front gates, where he hosts his annual golf tournament and clinic.
Protest for Awareness
According to a report by deseret.com, the protestors had been present for over two hours before Finau and his family arrived. Organized by Rocky Bowlby, the protest aimed to raise awareness about the situation.
“This is all about awareness,” Bowlby told the Deseret News. “No one knows the real Tony.”
Despite attempts by the news outlet to obtain a comment from Finau, they were asked to leave the premises.
Legal Actions and Claims
Bowlby stated that Finau, his father Kelepi “Gary” Finau, and brother Gipper Finau owe him over $100,000 for various expenses such as loans, rent, travel costs, and more. However, Bowlby clarified that he was not intending to seek compensation through legal means.
On the other hand, Monolai Hola has taken legal action against Finau, claiming he is owed more than $600,000. Hola is also seeking 20 percent of Finau’s professional winnings, as per court documents.
While one case against Finau was dropped in February, Hola’s lawsuit is set for trial in September. Deseret News reports that a settlement outside of court is unlikely to occur before the trial.
