Seth Waugh, PGA CEO, had some fiery opinions — literally — on LIV Golf in advance of this week’s PGA Championship.
Waugh told The Times that “their logic” about team play being a significant thing people can support is flawed. “I don’t think people care about it. And I can’t imagine how this business model could survive.
“They can fund the project for as long they like, but at some point burning money doesn’t make you feel good. They are not accomplishing anything. I think it’s logical that you should work toward some kind of agreement. I hope that the game will come back together.
Waugh didn’t backtrack on his comments during Tuesday’s PGA press conference, which was held in advance of the 105th PGA Championship, at Oak Hill.
Waugh stated that “we don’t believe division is in the interest of the game.” “As an ex-businessman, I believe disruption is good. I believe that good things have come out of it. The players have certainly benefited in many ways. I think it’s a good idea to have more fans interact with the game and see the best players more often. All this disruption has increased interest in the sport.
“But I struggle, and I’ve done so since the beginning, or even before, to understand how this is a sustainable business plan.”
Waugh and Kerry Haigh, PGA’s chief championships officer answered a variety of questions. Here are five other things you should know about their press conference.
