In recent weeks, devastating wildfires have swept through parts of the country, impacting various areas, including golf courses. One such incident occurred near North Platte, Nebraska, where a wildfire posed a significant threat to GrayBull Club, a property owned by Dormie Network in Maxwell. Despite the challenges, the swift actions taken by the staff helped mitigate the situation.
Background of GrayBull Club
GrayBull Club, a project initiated by renowned golf course architect David McLay Kidd, is situated in the southern region of the Sandhills, approximately an hour away from prestigious courses like Sand Hills Golf Club and Prairie Club. The construction of GrayBull Club began in 2022, with a focus on creating a unique and exceptional golfing experience.
Protection Measures
One of the standout features of GrayBull Club is its underground decoder-based irrigation system, which played a vital role in safeguarding the club during the recent wildfire incident. This innovative system, implemented as a preventive measure, effectively aided in controlling and mitigating the fire, underscoring the foresight in the club’s infrastructure planning.
Response to the Wildfire
During the wildfire threat, the onsite team at GrayBull Club, led by Director of Agronomy Michael Sheely and volunteer firefighter Ben Boehm, sprang into action. They utilized the irrigation system and deployed a mobile water truck that dispensed approximately 45,000 gallons of water to protect the club’s structures and extinguish hot spots.
Zach Peed, President of Dormie Network, commended the team for their prompt response, which ultimately safeguarded GrayBull Club and averted any injuries. Despite the fire encroaching on the course and reaching the fairways, the infrastructure and facilities remained intact, with only minimal damage reported.
Community Support
Following the successful containment of the wildfire at GrayBull Club, the team extended their support to the North Platte community by providing water assistance to volunteer fire trucks. Additionally, a fundraising initiative has been launched to aid in combating future wildfire threats. The Dormie Network Foundation will match all donations up to $100,000, with the aim of acquiring another fire engine for the Maxwell Volunteer Fire Department and expanding their existing facilities.
