Scottie Scheffler returned to his old ways after a terrible Friday and began making birdies on Sunday.
The world No. 2, made seven birdies, a hole-out par and an eagle to post a 9-under 62 at El Camaleon Golf Course during the 2022 World Wide Technology Championship in Mayakoba. He tied for third with five other players after posting the lowest final round score on his PGA Tour career.
It’s difficult to know how badly Scheffler performed Friday without Shotlink data from Riviera Maya, Mexico. However, it was bad enough that Scheffler had to return to the Scotty Cameron T-5 Proto mallet putter that he used in South Carolina two weeks ago.
Scheffler said that Scotty Cameron Newport 2’s Scotty Cameron Newport 2 was “never too far away”. “I went back yesterday to my old putter for this round. It was weird to see so many putts not make it into the cup. This is when I usually try out new things. This is probably something I will continue to play with.
Scheffler’s day started promisingly with a hole out at the par-4 3rd hole starting from 108 yards.
“There wasn’t anyone at the green, and I hit a great shot. It looked like it landed very close to the hole, but we couldn’t see or hear anything. Nobody was clapping. When I stood up, I thought, “Oh, man! It must have spun off of the green.” Scheffler confirmed that the cup was in.
Scheffler was pondering the fact that he needed either to win or to finish alone second to surpass Rory McIlroy to regain world No. 1. 1?
He said, “I was just trying out to get out there and play a round of golf.” It was great to be No. It’s a great feeling to be No.1 in the world. However, it isn’t something that will occupy much of my thoughts.
Scheffler will be playing next week at the Cadence Houston Open. This tournament was a close win for Scheffler last year. After shooting his sixth round at 62 or less since the start of 2019, Scheffler is confident. This marks the longest streak of players on Tour to achieve that score.
Scheffler stated, “A few things go my direction, a few more puts go in, and I could have won the tournament,”
