The 2022-23 PGA TOUR sunsets in Georgia will be the fall event. 156 golfers will play at Sea Island Resort on St. Simons Island to take part in The RSM Classic. Sleeper Picks The ninth and final event before the holiday break will split the field of 156 over two courses, Seaside (host) and Plantation during the first two rounds. For the last 36 holes of the year, the top 65 players and ties will be returning to Seaside. Colt and Alison built the Seaside course in 1929. This classic is still in use today. Tom Doak, who was the last major renovator to complete the course’s renovations, did so last century (1999). Walter Travis designed the Plantation course in 1928, before Davis Love III redesigned it in 2019. From the initial event in 2010, Seaside was the only course that was in play through five subsequent editions. Plantation was added to rotation for the 2016 edition (2015 calendar years) and expanded the field. Seaside is a par 70 and plays at 7,005 yards. It also has the oldest TifEagle greens in TOUR. Plantation is only 55 yards longer, but has four par-5s on its par-72 layout. Seaside features tighter fairways and a larger green complex. Players of this level don’t have to worry about recovering with wedges only two inches thick of Bermuda rough. The weekend will be more enjoyable if you can keep the momentum going by getting up and down and holing putts. Plantation has contributed to an increase in scoring. In the five seasons prior to the addition, the lowest aggregate at Seaside was 16-under. The highest winning total in seven editions that had Plantation included was 17-under. 19-under is the next worst total. It’s clear what is required this week: Going low. The courses are well-equipped with water and sand, but the average winning scores suggest that vacationers might have more to lose. For those who visit Seaside often, the 13th edition should be a great reference. The door is wide open to all, as is the case for shootouts on the shortest layout on TOUR. Robert Streb is the only multiple winner. Seventeen of the twelve champions won their maiden TOUR victory here, five of which were the last seven. All four of the winners were in their 30s. The course record at Seaside (60), was matched twice last season, while the tournament record (22 under) was also tied. The purse for 2022 is $8.1million with the winner receiving $1.458 Million and 500 FedExCup Points. Mother Nature is not to be ignored as winds are expected blow at 10 MPH each day. The week will be cold with temperatures falling throughout the week. Expect lows in the 50s and 60s. BRRRRRRRRRR!
