ST. SIMONS ISLAND (Ga.) – Taylor Montgomery is undoubtedly the standout among this season’s crop PGA TOUR rookies. Montgomery is best known for narrowly missing the TOUR card two times in 2021. He has quickly proved that he belongs on golf’s highest stage. His successful start on the PGA TOUR was made even more rewarding Sunday when he won in the RSM Birdies Fore Love contest. The competition awards the player who makes the most birdies or eagles in the fall portion. They also receive donations to children- and family-focused charities. Montgomery was one behind Patrick Rodgers, and four ahead Will Gordon in the RSM Birdies Fore Love Race with 155 birdies. Montgomery was awarded $300,000. Rodgers received $150,000, and Gordon $50.000. Montgomery remained at the top of the standings, with an eagle on Sunday’s 15th hole and a birdie at No. 18. After hitting his par-5 15th-to-9-foot approach from 240 yards, he hit a second shot of 177 yards on 18 to 9-foot. The RSM Classic was the last official PGA TOUR event. Montgomery was T15 at The RSM Classic. This was his sixth top-15 finish in seven starts. Montgomery will start 2023 ranked 11th at the FedExCup. This is the highest ranking rookie class. It was a pleasant fall. Montgomery stated, “I played really well. I had a lot more birdies than I should have, but it was still a good round.” Montgomery has a unique combination of length off of the tee, and skilled putting. This is a recipe to a lot of birdies.
