ST. SIMONS ISLAND (Ga.) — Patrick Rodgers made four birdies in a row late Saturday to finish with a par save for a 6-under-64. This gave him a share in the lead with Ben Martin in RSM Classic and another chance at his PGA TOUR title. Martin looked poised to match that score, but he missed the par putt on the 18th green. He shot 65. The final PGA TOUR event of 2018 saw them at 14-under 198. It was not a two-man race. There were ten players within two shots of leading the field, including Sahith Theegala (68), Brian Harman (64) as well as Harry Higgs (74). Harry Higgs was at the top of the leaderboard at the beginning of the day, and had a 25-foot birdie on the last hole for a 70. Cole Hammer, who is from Texas and was playing on a sponsor exemption at the weekend, was tied for first place. Through five holes, he was four over and managed a 72. He was still only four shots behind. After last season’s August end, Rodgers hit the reset key and set up a plan together with swing coach Jeff Smith to make incremental improvements. It seems to be working. Three weeks ago, he tied for third in Bermuda and was a constant presence at the fall events. Rodgers was the highest-ranked amateur in the world during his last year at Stanford. Rodgers is making his 226th appearance on the PGA TOUR, and still looking for his first victory. It wasn’t long before he was in the mix. He made a 25-foot birdie shot on the 13th hole. Jeff Smith, my coach, gave me a small offseason. Rodgers stated that we had a solid plan. I feel more at ease. It’s a difficult game and it’s nice to see hard work pay off. Eighteen of the top eight players on the leaderboard have not won on the PGA TOUR. Theegala was certainly a good player during his rookie year, which saw him reach TOUR Championship. Taylor Pendrith (65), gained a lot of experience in his first Presidents Cup match. Taylor Montgomery’s rookie season has been a success with five top 15 finishes. He is currently at No. He is currently at No. 65 in the world. Martin’s only PGA TOUR win was in Las Vegas eight years ago. Canada’s Adam Svensson made the most of the 62-hole score, with an eagle on Theegala’s par-5 15th. This put him just one shot behind Andrew Putnam and Theegala, who shared the 36-hole lead. For a 69, he saved par from the bunker on his last hole.
