This golf movies list includes comedies, dramas, and biographical sketches. If you’re looking for something to entertain yourself with while preparing for your next round of golf, look no further. Golf movies can teach us a lot about human nature. In some cases, golf is viewed as a metaphor for life, and the stories behind some of these movies are even more inspiring than the games themselves. Read on to discover more about the many different films that feature golf.
The Greatest Game Ever Played
“The Greatest Game Ever Played” has an unusual level of realism. It opens with a young man, Harry Vardon, wondering what golf is. Unlike Vardon, Francis is not from upper-class stock. His humble upbringing and dedication to his craft makes his performance all the more moving. Shia LaBeouf’s performance is very subtle, yet fully-committed. It is the kind of performance that makes you want to cheer for the team, no matter how difficult it may be to lose.
Caddyshack
If you love golf, then you probably have seen the classic movie Caddyshack. It is one of the most famous golf movies, and is often quoted by avid golfers. In it, young caddy Francis Ouimet wins the 1913 U.S. Open, but the movie is much more than the gopher-ciding cabbie’s antics. Despite the fact that the film stars Shia LaBeouf, it doesn’t matter if you like the way he swings the ball.
From the Rough
If you like sports dramas, From the Rough should be on your list. Starring Taraji P. Henson as tough-hearted golf coach Catana Starks, this film has some great messages for fans of both sports movies. In addition to the inspirational stories of the characters in the movie, From the Rough also includes a lot of action and shoving matches. Even though the movie is based on a true story, you will enjoy the sports-themed messages of this film.
The Three Stooges
A list of golf movies isn’t complete without The Three Stooges. Their zany antics made their first film one of the greatest comedy movies ever made. The Three Stooges were accused of stealing chickens from a coop, but were later proven innocent. They then steal fish from a pet store tank and then steal a plumber’s truck in order to escape. In one of their most memorable films, The Three Stooges pretend to be plumbers to fix a leak in a mansion.
Frailty
The first two Bill Paxton-directed golf movies, The Greatest Game Ever Played and Frailty, were fine, but The Greatest Game never had the kind of likable character that made these films popular. But the latter was a far better movie, and I’d like to discuss them in more detail. “Frailty” has some improbabilities and problems, but McConaughey gives an impressively dialed-down performance. The film is also visually understated, with a sense of place and atmosphere that makes the action and tension so tense.
Tin Cup
There are many golf movies, but only a handful of them have the chemistry that makes them so enjoyable. This romantic comedy features Kevin Costner as a flaky psychiatrist trying to win the heart of his clinical assistant, Molly Griswold (Rene Russo). In this movie, you’ll also see a few memorable shots of golf courses and the famous tee off. This is a film you won’t forget.
Miracle on the 17th Green
‘Miracle on the 17th Green’ is a short novel by Travis McKinley, a writer of sports novels. In this short story, an avid golfer loses his job after his 50th birthday and decides to try to qualify for the Senior Tour. After winning a tournament to qualify for the Senior Open, he miraculously wins the Pebble Beach tournament. However, the movie’s real miracle happens on the 17th hole.
