A Surprising Victory
Spencer Levin, a seasoned golfer, recently made headlines with his unexpected victory at the Korn Ferry Tour’s Veritex Bank Championship. After 17 years and 10 months of trying, Levin finally clinched his first victory in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event. Despite being overshadowed by other players’ achievements, this win is undoubtedly a significant milestone in Levin’s career.
An Uphill Battle
Levin, now 39 years old, started the final round of the Veritex Bank Championship in Dallas trailing the leader by six shots. However, he managed to catch up to the leader and birdied the last hole, securing a remarkable 63 at the Texas Rangers Golf Club. With a four-round total of 20-under par, Levin emerged as the champion. Reflecting on his victory, Levin admitted, “I didn’t think I was going to win the tournament until I did.”
This victory is a testament to Levin’s resilience and determination. Throughout his professional career, he has faced numerous challenges and setbacks. Despite never reaching the pinnacle of success predicted during his amateur days, Levin has earned close to $10 million over 17 seasons. At one point, he even climbed to the 60th spot in the Official World Golf Ranking. However, a series of near misses and a loss of his PGA Tour card in the 2016-17 season took a toll on Levin’s confidence.
The Journey Continues
Following the loss of his PGA Tour card, Levin experienced a decline in playing opportunities. His appearances on the Korn Ferry Tour became scarce, and he struggled to secure guaranteed starts in tournaments. However, Levin never lost faith in his abilities and remained determined to prove himself. He consistently participated in Monday qualifiers and missed out on several opportunities to qualify for major events by a single stroke.
Despite these setbacks, Levin remained resolute, stating, “I still believe I’m a good player.” His dedication paid off with his recent victory, which secured him a Korn Ferry Tour card for 2024. However, Levin’s ultimate goal is to earn a promotion to the PGA Tour by finishing in the top 5 at the final stage of Q-School.
A Transformed Perspective
While Levin’s journey has been filled with ups and downs, he has undergone personal transformations along the way. In 2017, he quit smoking after his grandfather passed away from emphysema. In 2021, he decided to take a break from alcohol, which turned into a long-term commitment. Levin’s decision to prioritize his health and well-being has had a profound impact on his life and career. He has embraced a healthier lifestyle, regularly hitting the gym and dedicating more time to his family.
As Levin prepares for the final stage of Q-School, he reflects on his journey and the perspective he has gained over the years. He no longer views golf as a life-or-death matter, but rather as an opportunity to continue doing what he loves. Levin is determined to make it back to the PGA Tour and pursue his unfinished business of winning at the highest level.
Spencer Levin’s story is a reminder that success in professional golf doesn’t always come easily. It requires perseverance, resilience, and a belief in one’s abilities. Levin’s journey from an underdog to a PGA Tour hopeful is an inspiration to aspiring golfers and a testament to the power of determination.
