Introduction
Boyne Golf, renowned for its 10 golf courses in Michigan, is thrilled to announce the addition of a new and innovative par-3 course called Doon Brae. Designed by Ray Hearn, this extraordinary nine-hole layout will be sculpted into the ski slope behind The Highlands Main Lodge in Harbor Springs. Set to open in the summer of 2024, Doon Brae promises a one-of-a-kind golfing experience for enthusiasts of all skill levels.
The Concept and Design
The name Doon Brae is derived from the Scottish terms “Doon,” which signifies descending into a valley, and “Brae,” meaning a steep bank or hillside. This unique course will be situated in the vicinity of the resort’s former Cuff Links par-3 course.
According to Bernie Friedrich, the director of golf course renovations and development at Boyne Resorts, Doon Brae will make history as the first modern golf course ever built on a ski hill. The course will feature three or four stacked wall bunkers and will forgo traditional tee boxes. Instead, there will be a single marker on each hole, allowing guests to play from any position they choose.
The greens at Doon Brae will be inspired by renowned greens from around the world. While they won’t be replicas, they will offer a unique and visually striking appearance. Additionally, the fairways will be sodded, meticulously maintained, and surrounded by tall fescue, lending a serene and captivating ambiance to the course.
The Architect: Ray Hearn
Hailing from Michigan, Ray Hearn is an accomplished golf course designer who is collaborating with Boyne Golf on various projects, including Doon Brae. In addition to the par-3 course, Hearn will be designing a 1.5-acre putting course adjacent to Doon Brae.
Hearn’s main objective with Doon Brae is to minimize uphill walks, despite the steep slope of the course. The layout will span between 678 and 993 yards, predominantly moving horizontally across the slope. The holes will range from 57 to 134 yards. Hearn drew inspiration from the iconic Royal County Down in Northern Ireland and incorporated elements of famous template greens into the design.
An Enjoyable Experience for All
Ray Hearn ensured that Doon Brae offers an enjoyable experience for golfers of all ages and skill levels. The course’s routing takes into account families who wish to play together. Each hole presents a unique challenge, with hole No. 1 being level, No. 2 uphill, No. 3 downhill, No. 4 uphill, and holes No. 5, 6, and 7 being sidehill, with No. 5 slightly uphill. The final two holes, No. 8 and No. 9, will play downhill.
Additional Amenities
In addition to the exceptional golfing experience, Doon Brae will offer various amenities to enhance guests’ enjoyment. Fire pits will be strategically placed throughout the course, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Music will provide a lively backdrop, while food service will ensure that players can indulge in their favorite refreshments. The combination of these elements will transform Doon Brae into an extraordinary entertainment environment.
Conclusion
With the addition of Doon Brae, Boyne Golf continues to solidify its reputation as a premier golf resort destination. This innovative par-3 course, built on a ski slope, promises a visually stunning and enjoyable experience for golfers and their families. Whether you’re a seasoned golfer or a beginner, Doon Brae at Boyne Golf is a must-visit destination that combines the beauty of Northern Michigan with the thrill of an exceptional golfing adventure.
