Gull Lake View is a part of Midwest’s golf fabric for nearly six decades. It’s located in southern Michigan, between Kalamazoo (home to Kellogg’s cereal) and Battle Creek (home to Kelloggs cereal). One family is responsible for this. The Scott family, now in its fourth generation of ownership, continues to build Gull Lake View into America’s most popular family-owned golf resort destination. The renowned Stoatin Brae is one of Gull Lake View’s six golf courses. It was awarded the National Golf Course Owners Association’s “National Golf Course of the Year” in 2020.

The story: Darl Scott, a local golfer, left Gull Lake Country Club in 1963 to create a high-quality and affordable facility for all to enjoy. With Gull Lake West, their first course, Darl Scott and Letha built a beautiful, rolling golf course that could easily be mistaken for the northern Michigan landscape.
Gull Lake View became more popular because the Scotts worked hard. Two of their sons managed the family’s golf business through the next generation. They continued its growth and developed Gull Lake East, its second course. The 36-hole course quickly became the “buzzword” in Michigan golf. Golfers could also choose to stay over with the two-course option. The Scotts designed lodging.
Two more courses were designed by the family right down the road from their originals in late 1980s and early 90s. Gull Lake View was elevated to a higher level of beauty and challenge by Stonehedge North. This down-to-earth destination attracted golfers from all over the Midwest.

Gull Lake View was developed by the Scotts in a unique way. Darl designed each course and used his construction, agronomy and landscaping skills to construct his “Field of Dreams.” Unfortunately, only two of the resort’s courses were built by the Scotts.
They acquired Bedford Valley in 1988. It hosted the Michigan Open many times. After that, their philosophy was completely changed and they created a minimalist design.
Stoatin Brae was opened by Brian Schneider, Eric Iverson and Don Placek. Stoatin Brae is a name that means Grand Hill in Scottish Gaelic. It aims to reach golfers who are open-minded and travel-minded, as well as those looking for new adventure courses. The layout is open-links-style with charming Scottish characteristics, allowing golfers to see 12 greens and flags from most directions. It also incorporates architectural elements from the golden age of golf’s design.
