LOS ANGELES - Donald Trump is desperate to host a major tournament.
It is unlikely to happen anytime soon.
The PGA of America canceled the PGA Championship scheduled for his Bedminster course on January 6, 2022 after Trump's supporters stormed U.S. Capitol, an act that was later found to be provoked by Trump. Greg Norman is more likely to be named PGA Tour commissioner than Trump.
Trump is facing a much bigger challenge this week than just hosting a major tournament. After the former president is arraigned in Florida federal court on Tuesday for 37 criminal charges, he will be able to watch the U.S. Open in Los Angeles Country Club.
Trump stated last month that, "everyone wants to see (the British) Open Championship" at the Trump Turnberry Golf Resort in Scotland. Not everyone.
It is not the person who would actually make this decision.
According to The Telegraph, the R&A which runs golf's oldest grand, has said that Turnberry will never host The British Open while it is owned and operated by Trump. The Telegraph reported that organizers were "adamant," the property wouldn't be considered because of the perceived security risk from potential protesters.
In an interview given to GB News a British radio and television station, Trump stated that he had spent a "tremendous amount" of money on redeveloping his course. Peter Dawson, the former R&A chief executive, advised him.
He said, "It was designed by a great architect." Peter Dawson recommended a great golf architect. "I said, give me the best and Martin Grant Hawtree. He is a wonderful man, a fantastic guy. He did an excellent job.
"We are going to make some minor changes, but the course is fantastic. Everyone wants to see The Open Championship here - the players because it's their favourite course and it's rated No. "The No. 1 course in Europe."
Turnberry doesn't even rank as the best course in Scotland. St. Andrews holds that distinction. Some lists do not include it in the top 10.
Turnberry hosted the British Open for the last time in 2009. Trump bought the property five year later. Staff waved hats with the slogan "Made Turnberry Great again" when Trump visited the resort a few months ago.
Trump will host three LIV Golf tournaments at his courses this year: Outside of Washington, D.C., Bedminster, New Jersey, and Doral, Florida.
