This week, the PGA TOUR makes its third stop in the fall swing and travels to Las Vegas, Nevada to play the Shriners Children’s Open. TPC Summerlin will host the tournament. This par-71 venue plays at 7,255 yards, and has been a staple of the PGA TOUR schedule over many years. This week’s greens will be pure bentgrass. DraftKings Fantasy Golf Lineups: PGA Tour $300K Pitch + putt [$100K to first] STRATEGY. The fall swing offers many courses that can be set up for low scoring. TPC Summerlin is a popular venue on the PGA TOUR. It was ranked third on the PGA TOUR for 2020-21. TPC Summerlin’s elevation helps players — the air is thinner, which makes the ball travel further — and the course doesn’t have any penalty areas or thick rough. Water is allowed on four holes. However, players should not be too reckless with their drives. They will still be able to hit the pins on most greens if they are in a decent enough position. TPC Summerlin’s scoring system is based on the approaches. It’s not surprising that winners of this event tend to be more aggressive in the approach section. The last four winners have all gained more than 4.0 strokes on their approach and were among the top 10 in that statistic for the entire tournament. The greens at Summerlin are generally easier to hit, so proximity stats should be considered. A player who hits it close to the hole will have to do less work to convert those approaches to birdies with their putter. We’ve seen many golfers win on these greens. Kevin Na, who gained 14.2 strokes at TPC Summerlin, set a single-event mark in 2019. Although Na’s performance was a bit unusual, this event is more open and allows for players to hit the ball consistently. This means that any player who hits the ball well will likely have high green-in regulation percentages, which will allow them to challenge other players if they get hot. Cameron Davis ($9200) – Davis’ confidence should be impressive after he won the Presidents Cup, where he participated in five matches and scored two wins against an American team. We all know how talented Davis is. His win at Rocket Mortgage 2021 proved that he can handle low scores and win regular season events. Although Davis had a slow start to the fall swing (missing the cut at The Fortinet), he is sixth in long-term form both in birdie percentage and strokes won: these are approach stats for this field. He has been a good player in the desert, with four finishes at T16 or higher. He’s now 3-for-3 at the Shriners in made cuts. He also finished third at The American Express in Jan 2021. This event is held in Palm Springs. Rickie Fowler (7,800) The five-time PGA TOUR champion, who began 2022-23 strongly with a T6 finish in the first fall series event at Napa, may have new beliefs about a new season. Fowler’s Fortinet top 10 was his first since October 2021. But it’s how he achieved the result that will be remembered. Fowler was able to gain 6.0 strokes in ball-striking and also gained an improved perspective from the strokes-gained standpoint on and around greens. Fowler, 33, should find the setup this week a boon. He has enjoyed some of his most memorable moments on TPC sets (winner TPC Scottsdale) and in the desert. Fowler has only made four appearances at TPC Summerlin in his career. However, two of those made cut have resulted in top-25 finishes. Fowler is worth having on your daily fantasy roster, even though his DraftKings price remains low. Also, he won’t likely draw many rosterships given his poor 2021-22 season. Joel Dahmen ($7.100) Dahmen had an excellent week at Sanderson Farms. He finished T13 and gained over 6.0 strokes of ball-striking (off tees and approach). Dahmen is a PGA TOUR veteran, with a win already (2021 PuntaCana), so fantasy players should be intrigued when we see a rise in his form. Dahmen missed four of the five previous cuts. However, his record at Shriners has seen him go 4 for 4, in made cuts over his career and also post two top-25 finishes in the last four years. He has a very good track record at this event and his approach game is trending well, which is crucial to his success at TPC Summerlin.
