The PGA TOUR is continuing its international run as it travels to Mexico for the World Wide Technology Championship in Mayakoba. This event, which was first held in 2007, is now its 16th edition. The field features 13 of the 50 top players in the OWGR, with many top players returning to the course. DraftKings Fantasy Golf Lineups: PGA Tour $300K Pitch + Putt ($100K to 1st] STRATEGY. The course is similar to the Bermuda course last week, as it is again set in a tropical setting and has a resort-style layout. El Camaleon, a par 71 measuring 7,021 yards, is located near the Mayakoba ocean. Since 2007, El Camaleon has been the tournament’s host. This event was once a more popular one, but the cooler weather and stronger winds of November make it one of the most low-scoring events in the fall swing. Mayakoba’s winners have reached 20-under or better in four out of five seasons. This is due to the slower and more receptive paspalum greens that allow almost every hole to yield a birdie. It is a par 71 course with four par 3s and three par 5s. The par 3s, which play under 200 yards, are the most difficult holes on the course. The par 4s are the most difficult holes on the course. Three of them extend over 450 yards and three of these longer holes can be found in the closing six-hole stretch. El Camaleon will have short par 3s and many par 4s that require approaches of 150 yards or less. This will make wedge play and proximity stats essential. This venue is known for its high greens percentage and players don’t have to worry too much about scrambling. This week’s tee is slightly more challenging than the previous week. Driving accuracy will be more important. El Camaleon fairways are slightly more difficult to hit than at other venues on the PGA TOUR. If a player gets in trouble (e.g. hit it in the jungle, native area), then it almost certainly will come off the tee. Brendon Todd and Viktor Hovland were the last winners at El Camaleon. They were well within the top 20 for driving accuracy. This week is more about overall ball striking than power stats. When researching stats, you should look out for players who are trending high in Strokes Gained. This includes those who are playing with a short iron and who are improving their strokes through approach and distance. GOLFERS NEED TO CONSIDER Emiliano Grillo ($9,000.) This could be a great opportunity for Grillo to win his second PGA TOUR title. In his last ten starts, the Argentine has been improving his game on and around greens. He’s now finished in four of the top five. He has placed runner-up at the John Deere Classic as well as the 3M Open in the latter part of the summer. Grillo is more technical than a power player, and should be recognized for his accuracy off the green. He is ranked among the top 50 for accuracy off the tee in 2022/23 and continues to trend strongly with his irons. In fact, he ranks in the top 30 in Strokes Gained Approach stats over 24 rounds. Grillo is also a reliable producer for fantasy purposes. He ranked in the top 10 in birdie percentage or higher over the same period. Grillo has played El Camaleon six more times and finished in the top 15 at this course three times. He is a great value target for upper-tier players, at just over $9,000 Jason Day ($9 200) Although it is tempting to spend a lot for the most elite names in the field, I prefer targeting the former world No. This range has 1 Day. Day is always at risk of injury, but his swing changes are starting to pay off. Day enters this week with T8 and T11 finishes from his previous two starts. Day is also on his second week of rest, and this could make it possible for him to record another top finish and possibly even a comeback win. Day is currently 32nd on the TOUR in driving accuracy. He has gained 5.4 strokes and 4.1 strokes in his previous two starts. We won’t need to worry about Day’s short game this week, as he has easy-to-hit greens. Day is a great choice for creating balanced lineups on DraftKings. His improved ball striking should make the setup ideal. Ryan Moore ($6,300). This event has produced many veteran winners in the past. Graeme McDowell, Pat Perez, and Matt Kuchar all won at this event in their 30s and 40s. It’s reasonable to believe that Moore could be able this week to contend. Although the four-time PGA TOUR winner had struggled in recent seasons, there are signs that his game is starting to improve. Moore’s best attributes have always been his accuracy, short iron play, and he enters this week having gained strokes on approach in four consecutive starts. This has resulted in two top-30 finishes. DraftKings would be happy with that result, considering his extremely low salary. Moore has proven that he can do more with shorter setups. He was shocked to be crowned the 2021 John Deere classic’s surprise runner-up. Moore is a low-priced GPP flyer and offers great salary relief.
