MEMPHIS (Tenn.) – Justin Thomas, Rory McIlroy spoke with the media following their nine holes at TPC Southwind’s Pro-AM on Wednesday morning.
McIlroy and Thomas are the two biggest names on the PGA Tour. Their news conferences could not have been more timely following Tuesday’s LIV Golf-PGA Tour court ruling. Judge Beth Labson Freeman ruled for the Tour over three LIV Golf players who wanted a chance to play at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, Memphis, Tennessee.
McIlroy stated that “It was an excellent day for the tour, and most of the members yesterday.”
McIlroy is a member the PGA Tour board. McIlroy said Wednesday that he was offered a deal by PGL to play with LIV Golf players.
Thomas spoke out about how Scottie Scheffler’s amazing season, in which he spent most of it at No. 1, is being ruined by the LIV-PGA Tour conflict. 1 player.
Here are five of McIlroy and Thomas’s most fascinating takeaways:
Thomas reports on the rumors about Cameron Smith and other potential departures to LIV Golf. “Nothing is official until its official.” There are so many names and rumors being tossed around. This is probably the most frustrating part for me.
Thomas, on the PGA Tour LIV Lawsuit: “It wasn’t something I could do anything about. It wasn’t something that I was worried about. It’s something I believe in, and that it will be decided appropriately when it gets to that point with judges and lawyers.
McIlroy, a spokesperson for PGA Tour: “ I don’t feel it’s my job up here to stand up for the Tour and be a spokesperson. It’s just the position I am in, especially since I was elected to the PGA Tour board. It was great to be able to do that. It’s a great feeling to feel safe when I am in the ropes. It makes the golf part of it so much more enjoyable.
McIlroy: On players leaving for LIV golf: “Guys will make the best decisions for themselves and that’s perfectly fine. I don’t mind anyone going to LIV golf or accepting guaranteed money. It’s entirely up to you to decide what you do and how it suits your needs.
McIlroy reflects on the unease of the LIV Golf situation. “I think the root cause of the resentment among members of this Tour (golfers who participate in LIV Golf) is the desire to get back in here without any consequences.” That would be unfair to anyone who has read and complied with the rules and regulations of the PGA Tour.
