ENGLEWOOD (Fla.) — A senior citizen died after being seized by two alligators and falling into a pond late Friday, Sarasota Sheriff’s officials reported.
The incident took place at Boca Royale Golf and Country Club, Englewood, just south of Sarasota. According to a news release by the sheriff’s, the woman was not identified and her age was not released. She was seen falling into the pond near her home, and struggled to stay afloat.
According to a news release, “While in water, two alligators were seen near the victim and eventually grabbed her while she was in the water.”
Officials said that the victim was declared dead on the spot and that the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission responded by capturing and removing the alligators. The cause of death has not been established.
Late Friday, no further information was released. The investigation is still in its early stages, according to authorities.
According to its website, Boca Royale Golf and Country Club, a gated community of approximately 1,000 acres in South Sarasota County, includes homes, lakes and golf, as well as nature preserves.
