Geoff Ogilvy said that playing at the Barracuda Championship and the Rocket Mortgage Classic this past week has tipped his tongue. These are Ogilvy’s first starts on the PGA Tour in 2018 and everyone, from Webb Simpson to caddies up to Tour officials, is stopping what they are doing to say hello.
He says, “It’s nice to dip a foot in the ocean again.” He shakes his head as he reports on Thursday’s Detroit Golf Club opening round score of 2 over 73.
He said, “Rubbish.”
Since moving to Australia, he has played a lot of golf at Victoria Golf Club. This is his long-time playground in Melbourne, Peninsula Kingswood, where the North course was renovated, and at Royal Melbourne where he became a member. He says, “It’s been an ongoing project.” “They never had any pros as members.”
Ogilvy, however, is quick to highlight the differences between tournament golf and golf. He also stated that he hadn’t been “flexing this muscle.”
He says, “It’s an muscle you must flex.”
Ogilvy will be returning to the Presidents Cup in September, where he will act as “chief sandwich maker,” or vice captain for Trevor Immelman, International Team Captain. He says that he will play more after the biennial match is over.
He said, “At some point, you realize this is exactly what you do.”
