Golf enthusiasts expressed their displeasure when the 2024 U.S. Open broadcast transitioned to Peacock, NBC’s streaming service.
The Opening Round at Pinehurst No. 2
The 2024 U.S. Open commenced on Thursday morning at Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina. Cable television provided live coverage and featured groups during the opening round.
Transition to Peacock
However, at 5 p.m. ET, viewers were required to switch to Peacock or access the U.S. Open website for continued coverage. While the website offered multiple free streams, it was the Peacock coverage that stirred discontent among fans on social media.
CEO’s Perspective
Mike Whan, CEO of the U.S. Golf Association, emphasized the enhancement of the TV product. The coverage on Thursday showcased more golf shots and fewer commercials. Nevertheless, when the broadcast shifted from cable TV while top players like the top three in the world were midway through their rounds, along with other renowned players on the course, it sparked frustration among many.
Social Media Backlash
Various reactions flooded social media platforms when the coverage transitioned from USA to Peacock. Fans expressed their disappointment and frustration at the abrupt change.
