Brandel Chamblee recently drew a comparison between stepping into Johnny Miller’s shoes as the lead analyst on NBC Sports and following the late comedian Robin Williams on stage. He expressed his view that replacing Johnny Miller, who was highly esteemed in that role, would be a challenging task for anyone.
Brandel Chamblee to Lead NBC’s Coverage
Brandel Chamblee, a 61-year-old former Tour professional turned broadcaster, has been appointed as the lead analyst for NBC’s coverage of the 2024 U.S. Open at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club. He will be working alongside Dan Hicks, the lead golf play-by-play voice, across NBC, Peacock, and USA Network.
Enhanced Commentator Pairings
Sam Flood, the executive producer and president of production at NBC Sports, mentioned that they have introduced a new odd/even system of hole assignments for commentator pairings this year. This innovative approach aims to provide more context for the viewers by allowing play-by-play announcers to explain the ‘why’ and ‘how’ of each moment, while also facilitating better interaction between analysts and on-course reporters.
Returning Faces and New Additions
In addition to Brandel Chamblee, NBC has also confirmed the return of Jim “Bones” Mackay and Roger Maltbie as on-course reporters, along with Gary Koch as an analyst. Jim Mackay previously served as the lead analyst at the Mexico Open and contributed to Golf Channel’s coverage of the Augusta National Women’s Amateur. On the other hand, Roger Maltbie and Gary Koch were part of the broadcasting team at the Players Championship in March.
The U.S. Open, scheduled for June 13-16, will see NBC delivering over 200 hours of programming to golf enthusiasts.
