It’s back. He’s back.
Capital One’s The Match returns Saturday for its seventh edition, but the main story is that golf fans will be able to watch Tiger Woods play again.
Woods had been originally scheduled to play in the Hero World Challenge last Wednesday, but he was late to the game. This sent everyone scrambling for Google plantar faciitis. Woods was last seen playing on the St. Andrews golf course in July at the 150th Open Championship.
Woods is ready to go, and will be wearing a microphone when he teams with Rory McIlroy for a 12-hole match against the duo of Justin Thomas & Jordan Spieth at Pelican Golf Course in Belleair, Florida. This venue hosts the LPGA’s Pelican Women’s Championship.
Thomas stated that “I’m certain it will be very entertaining,” before the Hero. It’s going to be fun for all of us. Even if the event wasn’t on TV, it would be a lot of fun for us to go out and play 12 holes together. It will be fun.
Woods will make his third Match appearance, but it will be his first for all three. It will be the third match without a celebrity golfer. Previous editions featured Steph Curry, Charles Barkley and Josh Allen.
What to Watch
TNT will provide the main coverage, but TBS, truTV, and HLN will also have simulcasts. Bleacher Report will also have coverage on its social media channels during the competition.
Brian Anderson will host the show, with Trevor Immelman and Charles Barkley acting as analysts. Kathryn Tappen will serve as the on-course reporter.
At 6 p.m. ET will begin. ET is Anderson’s 30-minute roundtable discussion. TNT believes that “no topic is off limits.”
Capital One’s The Match Prematch Show will be on at 6:30 p.m. ET.
Format
Each player plays his ball during the round. The team score will be determined by the lowest individual score for each hole. The competition will last 12 holes. The high temperature Saturday in Belleair is predicted to be 73°F and there is only a ten percent chance of rain.
The money
Prizes of up to $750,000 and $2.5 million will be awarded in the challenge holes. These funds will go to various charities. Capital One’s The Match raised over $33 million for charities since its 2018 launch. This year, some of the funds raised will be used to help with Hurricane Ian relief efforts.
