In a recent exchange of words on social media, Ian Poulter has alleged that Billy Horschel demanded a staggering $45 million to become a part of LIV Golf.
The Start of the Spat
The argument began when Poulter made a post on social media regarding swing speeds. Horschel, unable to resist, called it out as exaggerated, stating that Poulter was one of those individuals who tend to overstate their club head speed.
Swing Speed Showdown
Horschel posted a chart showing Poulter’s swing speed as 110 mph. Poulter quickly disputed these numbers, claiming that they were incorrect and that his actual swing speed is 115 mph.
This is quite amusing. My own swing speed is 115 mph, and I can carry the ball 290-295 yards. Unless these distances are measured on a runway or up Mount Everest, they are all inaccurate. All yardages provided should represent carry distances, and launch conditions must be specified.
The $45 Million Demand
This discrepancy in swing speeds led to a further discussion, with Poulter asserting that Horschel had demanded a staggering $50 million to join LIV Golf. LIV Golf is a new rival league led by Greg Norman and financially backed by the Saudi Arabian government’s Public Investment Fund.
It’s alright, Billy… I usually have a good grasp of numbers. So, I was only off by around $9 million per mph difference that you asked for to join LIV. What’s a few numbers between friends?
Poulter concluded his post with the statement, “What’s a few numbers between friends?”
Teammates Turned Rivals
Poulter and Horschel were previously teammates almost a decade ago when they both finished tied for third place at the Franklin Templeton Shootout. This event, which took place during the offseason, was later replaced by the mixed-team Grant Thornton Invitational.
Poulter’s Move to LIV Golf
Poulter made the decision to join LIV Golf before its inaugural event in June 2022. It is reported that he received a substantial sum of approximately $20 million for his participation in the circuit.
