Illinois leads by 11 shots at American Dunes Golf Club, Grand Haven, Michigan in the inaugural Folds of Honor Collegiate.
Adrien Dumont De Chassart de Chassart and Tommy Kuhl all shot 3-under-69s for Fightin’ Illini, while Jackson Buchanan shot an unbeaten 70. Illinois is 7 under, 36 holes, and the only team below par.
“This is what we seek. That’s Illini golf. We were able to close successfully. It was a pleasure to see,” Mike Small, Illinois head coach, said.
Senior Tommy Kuhl had just one bogey Tuesday on his card and has only three this week.
Kuhl said, “I hit it really solid today.” Kuhl said, “I put myself in good spots and played solid golf. I knew today’s conditions were tough and I was prepared to play solid golf.
Individual
Florida State is currently in second place heading into Wednesday’s final round, which starts at 4 over. At 7 over, Arizona and Liberty are tied for third. Kansas is alone fifth at 9 over.
“We got out of the gate, and we started to get on it very early. It was a positive start. That was something we hadn’t done in the previous event (Olympia Fields). It helps to be strong, and we carried that momentum into the back-nine. We finished well,” Kuhl stated.
Coach Small said that despite the large lead going into the final round they still have the same mentality.
“Tomorrow is zero-zero. Let’s play golf. Smalls said, “Take the same look as today and play Illini’s golf.”
Last week, Illinois hosted Fightin’ Illini Invitational. It finished second behind Stanford.
Smalls stated, “At Olympia Fields, we didn’t close as we wanted to, however, today we did and that’s progress.”
At 6 under, Brian Roberts from Florida State and Jonathan Yaun of Liberty are tied for the top spot on the individual leaderboard. Yaun, who was leading after Day 1, posted back-toback rounds of 69.
Roberts shot a 70-under round in the first round. He then kept his pace and shot a 4-under-par 68 on Tuesday. The Seminole junior is now 7 under on the par 5, after two rounds. After hitting the green in just two shots, he eagled 6th on Tuesday.
“That was the one I chose. Roberts stated that the rest was just a lot more wedges and some good shots.
Small is privileged to play in a tournament at Folds of Honor.
He said, “I believe it’s an educational experience.” “It’s great that the children can see this and learn about Folds of Honor so they can support it early on. To foster that, you need young people. While we would love to win, play well tomorrow and end it all, that is not the ultimate goal. It is important to treat yourself with respect, pride, and enjoy the event.
Wednesday will be the last round of the Folds Of Honor Collegiate. The leaders will begin at 8 a.m. ET.
