LA JOLLA (Calif.) – Jon Rahm was one behind the cut line, with five holes left to play in Thursday’s second round Farmers Insurance Open. Multiple streaks were at risk. Rahm just won back-to-back wins at The American Express and the Sentry Tournament of Champions. Rahm also had 21 consecutive made cuts entering the week, which is the longest streak of active TOUR records. Rahm was not at all concerned about the cut line. Rahm stated, “The goal was to win.” If I had been at par, it would have occurred to me in the last few holes. Going into 5, 9 and 10, I knew to focus on the par 5s and the short par 4. (No. Everything would be fine. It would be all right. On a windy afternoon on the Pacific coast, Rahm shot a second round of 5-under 67, matching Tano Goya’s low round. Rahm is T14 at 4-under, having made it to the cut with four strokes left. He is eight strokes behind 36-hole leader Sam Ryder but only two behind fourth place. After a round of 1-over 73 at Torrey Pines South Course, Rahm started the day in 116th position. This layout is the most challenging. The third and fourth rounds of the tournament will be played on Torrey South. Torrey North has a 71.455 stroke average, while Torrey South is at 74.038. (Thursday’s averages are 73.179 North and 75.859 South). Rahm knew that he would have the chance to make a move when the Farmers leaderboard standardizes after 36 holes. He made a move on Thursday’s last five holes and enters the “golf weekends” with a puncher’s chance. The 36 holes represent a metaphorical eternity, especially for the world’s most popular player, who has won four of his five previous official starts and is currently No. FedExCup’s No. 1. Rahm spoke out about his mindset into Thursday, saying that anything in the 60s would be amazing. Rahm said, “What I shot today man, I’m going skipping out on the golf course, cause it’s great round of golf.” Rahm was last to miss a cut on TOUR in September 2021 at the Fortinet Championship. His streak now stands at 22 and he’ll be playing just 55 minutes faster than the last threesome in Friday’s third round. The par-5 fifth hole was his personal highlight on Thursday. He chose 6-iron for his 191 yard approach and met up with Adam Hayes, his veteran caddie. Rahm stated that it seemed like it was supposed help, but it wasn’t. It’s more like a soft 6-iron. I asked Adam if he would mind if I took a little off. That’s when a great caddie steps in. Rahm converted the 12-footer for eagle and moved within the cut line. He was just getting started.
