BOLTON, Mass. The International LIV Golf Tournament received positive reviews from The Select Board. However, the board fined the tournament director for failing to get a permit for temporary signage.
“Overall I’m really happy with how things turned out,” Michael Goggin, Tournament Director, told the Select Board Sept. 15. “It took a lot of effort by everyone,” he said.
Goggin stated that he wanted to thank people for their support, patience, and understanding.
Goggin stated that it sounds like overall, our feedback was very positive. “It is really difficult to share the scale and scope of this thing until one is actually in front of it.”
Goggin said that the tournament was fortunate with the weather and had a “great finish”. Although I was pleased with the outcome, he acknowledged that there were always hiccups.
“I believe we did better than my expectations when it came to having some hiccups.”
Stan Wysocki, Chairman of the Select Board, stated that he didn’t see any change in the town from his perspective due to the influx of spectators.
“I believe the event went without a hitch and there were no incidents. Wysocki stated that Wysocki was grateful for all the work done by Wysocki and other agencies. “I don’t think we could have asked for anything better relative to how the event turned out.”
Goggin stated, “It did require a large part of support locally,” and added, “Apologies to the signage snafu.”
Wysocki stated that the tournament was not allowed to use temporary signs.
Don Lowe, Town Administrator, stated that he has never seen anything similar to the planning meetings and preparations that went into that tournament.
Lowe stated that the board takes temporary signage very seriously, and that it could issue a $300 fine.
Goggin stated, “I’m completely fine with that.”
Wysocki stated, “We do have an issue with consistency here.”
Lowe stated that he doesn’t believe the board is trying to give the impression that large events can be brought into town, and they would not be held to similar standards.
Goggin stated, “I don’t want to create a bad precedent. So I’m fine with it.”
Bob Czekanski, a member of the Select Board, stated that there was an issue with consistency and moved for the fine to be imposed. The board unanimously approved the motion.
Wysocki asked, “I assume we’ll have this again next year?”
Goggin stated that “nothing is set in stone.” “We are looking at nine events next, but the schedule is still in flux. We’ll let you know when we are certain.
Emily Winner, a member of the Select Board, asked about donations to community organizations.
Par 5, although it did not provide details about the amount going to each organization, referred to the event under “The Boston Invitational LIV to Give.” It listed the following:
* Local recipients were Bolton Conservation Trust, to support trail maintenance, environmental and education programs, and land stewardship; Friends of Bolton Seniors, to provide fuel, nutrition, and financial assistance to Bolton seniors; WHEAT-United Way of Tri-County to fund food security programs; Joseph and Leslie Carr Foundation, to feed local families this holiday season, and to fill cans at food banks and fund a diaper bank; and Nashoba Neighbors, to fund services that enable seniors to live in their own.
* Other recipients of funds included Coaching4Change, which provides low-income youth with mentorship services and empowering them with life skills that unlock success. Glen Doherty Memorial Foundation will fund scholarships for special operations vets transitioning out of military service. Boys and Girls Club of Assabet valley will fund after-school and Summer programs, STEM education materials and supplies. Partnerships with local museums are also possible. Bridge Over Troubled Waters will help homeless youth find self-sufficiency through education, employment, and life skills.
