Greg Norman announced Tuesday that he would not be attending this year’s QBE Shootout in Naples, which he started more than 30 years ago.
Norman posted on Instagram that he was not allowed to attend the tournament, which he has hosted every year since 1989. The golf legend didn’t give any details about who asked him to skip the event. However, he stated that it was due to his involvement with LIV Golf which is a controversial alternative to the PGA Tour, which is funded by Saudi Arabia. Its inaugural season began this year.
Norman wrote that “in some people’s minds(s), this is too disruptive, and evolution is perceived to be a bad thing.”

Rob Hartman, QBE Shootout director, said that organizers had been in talks with Norman for months about his role as QBE Host. However, all parties reached a consensus to have Norman leave.
Hartman stated that Hartman decided to take a step back as he got closer and let the spotlight remain on our incredible charitable partners. Hartman said that the event was founded 34 years ago and is still centered on charity. Greg made the decision to not allow anything to distract him from this event.
According to the Shootout’s website the tournament raised over $15 million for charity, most notable CureSearch for Children’s Cancer.
Norman stated in his post that he decided not to attend QBE “so that the mission can be kept in focus.”
Norman wrote, “To the Shootout charities and the City of Naples, and to all of you incredible volunteers, corporate sponsors and fans, I thank for your continued support.” “I will be missing you all this year, but I will definitely be there in spirit.”
Many PGA golfers who played in the QBE, such as 2021 champions Jason Kokrak or Kevin Na, have now joined the LIV Tour. This makes them ineligible for playing in PGA Tour-affiliated events including the QBE.
Hartman stated that the 24-player QBE field will be announced mid-October. The QBE Shootout will be held at Tiburon Golf Club, Dec. 7-11.
Hartman stated, “I anticipate we’ll certainly be having some new, fresh faces Naples, but a high-quality field once again,” Hartman added.
“Things look great; we expect to have a truly great event. We are all looking forward to December, and we’re hoping to put a lot of money on the board for charity.
