PONTE VEDRA BEEACH, Fla. — There is no lucky number listed in the PGA Tour media guide for Lucas Herbert.
It’s not 5.
Five trips to the water resulted in a pair quintuple-bogeys Friday. This made the Australian golfer’s debut at Players Championship a five-alarm fire. To follow his first round 82, he finished the second round with an 85. His total score was 23 over par.
Players Championship media guide records show Herbert’s 167 as the best two-round score of any player who missed the cut. Mike Brisky shot 170 in 2000. It was not immediately clear how many other players had two quintuple-bogeys at TPC Sawgrass’ Players Stadium Course.
Although the conditions were favorable for the first round, there were still some problems. Herbert was the worst victim, having already taken the lead after the first round. Friday did not improve.
Herbert was 17 years old when he played his eighth hole. The water swallowed Herbert’s first two attempts to the island green. He played five from the tee and hit the rough left. After chipping on, he two-putted for an 8.
Only nine players have scored higher at the 17th Players. The most recent was Byeong Hun An’s 11, in the first round of 2021.
Herbert’s 379-yard par-4 fourth was even worse and more bizarre.
An errant tee landed in the left rough, causing trouble. He discovered water and took a sip. He did it again. He did it again. He finished with a 9. No. Phillip Hancock’s 12th in 1985 is the record-breaking score at No.
Herbert was not done with his headaches. At No. 6, he reached the green in regulation but four-putted for a double bogey. 6 he was able to reach the green in regulation, but he four-putted for an extra bogey. No. 7: A sudden gust brought a chip back down the hill, bringing him to his original position. Another bogey.
Two-thirds Herbert’s playing group seemed to be under a cloud during the week. This included a sextuplebogey 10 from Aaron Wise on Thursday.
Herbert’s week highlights Sawgrass’s many pitfalls, even for professionals. He made the cut in 2022 at the Players, but finished in a tie for the 68th spot with a 7-over 295 finish. He is 51st in Official World Golf Ranking.
