Since the beginning of the 2022 spring seasons, Vanderbilt’s men’s golf team has been almost unbeaten in stroke play.
This hot streak continues into the fall. Vanderbilt was fourth in the SEC Fall Event, shooting 39 under. This beat Tennessee by four strokes. The Commodores have improved to 135-1-2 stroke play since the spring.
Matthew Riedel, Vanderbilt, won the individual title at 13 under 197. He beat a trio by one shot. At 12 under, Garrett Endicott from Mississippi State, Jake Hall of Tennessee, and Vanderbilt’s Gordon Sargent, 2022 NCAA individual champion, finished the race.
Vanderbilt faced Tennessee at Old Overton Club, Vestavia Hills (Alabama) in the match-play section of the event. The Volunteers defeated the Commodores 3-2. Redshirt freshman Lance Simpson and redshirt junior Jake Hall won their matches, while redshirt junior Bryce Lewis won his match to win the tournament title for Tennessee.

This tournament win is the Volunteers’ first title as a team since the 2020 Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic in which they won just before the COVID-19 shut down.
Hall finished tied for second in stroke play and gave Tennessee its first victory of the day. He pulled away from Cole Sherwood of Vanderbilt on the back nine, after a back and forth front nine, to win a 3&2 win. After trailing William Moll by one hole through fifteen holes, Simpson won three straight holes starting at hole 16. He then captured a 2-up win to give Tennessee its second match victory of the day. Although Reid Davenport of Vanderbilt won four out five holes, Simpson recorded a tie on 18, to win the 1-up victory and secure the Tennessee team title.
Kansas State’s remarkable feat
It is hard to believe even though you can see it with your own eyes.
The Wildcats won Tuesday’s Old Town Collegiate at Old Town Club, Winston Salem, North Carolina. It was an impressive feat.
Kansas State’s five players were all at 1-under 209 during the tournament. All of them. All of them.
In the team competition, Wake Forest was defeated by the Wildcats (4 over) in the final round. They finished 16th overall. Kansas State has now won its second fall championship.
Texas Tech wins the Inverness Intercollegiate Loaded Championship
Ludvig Aberg was instrumental in leading Texas Tech to victory over one of the strongest fall slate fields.
Texas Tech won the Inverness Intercollegiate at Inverness Club, Toledo, Ohio. They shot 1 over and beat Georgia Tech by six strokes. Oklahoma came third, Virginia fourth.
Aberg tied for fifth at even-par 213. Calum Scott finished second, two strokes behind Georgia Tech’s Christo Lambrecht, his teammate. At 2 under, Ben James, a freshman from Virginia and Maxwell Moldovan, an Ohio State student, tied for third.
