The Links at Whitehaven, Memphis, Tennessee, was throbbing with tempers earlier this month after a player hit a wrongly placed golf ball close to the hole. This happened when Wesley Caldwell, a 22-year-old from Nesbit, Mississippi, was participating.
According to witnesses, Caldwell threw the ball towards the victims before striking the victim with his club and knocking him to the floor.
According to WREG Memphis, Caldwell was booked in Shelby County Jail for aggravated assault on Monday.
Mark Coleman, the victim, was taken to hospital and flown to Regional One Medical Center with a fractured skull. Coleman, a member Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity was placed on a ventilator.
Caldwell was released with a $5,000 bond.
Officials from the NAACP in the region support a call to bring an attempted murder case against the perpetrators of the incident. The president of the local NAACP chapter stated that the incident was not provoked.
“Mark wasn’t there exchanging blow-for-blow with this guy. He was trying defuse the situation. He walked away, and he was attacked as he was, and now he’s fighting to his life,” Vann Turner of the NAACP Memphis chapter told Fox 13 News.
