The imminent closure of a golf course located near Pennsylvania’s southern border has created a stir in the sporting community. The state’s overarching plan is to broaden environmental opportunities in the Michaux State Forest, which could see the golf course shut down in the coming years.
The Department of Conservation and National Resources (DCNR) has recently expressed its intentions of not renewing the lease of the property, currently home to South Mountain Golf Course. The golf course, situated just east of Mont Alto off Pa. 233, has become a favorite amongst golfing enthusiasts.
The state environmental agency is keen on transforming the site into its new Forest Resource Management Center. According to the agency’s site evaluation plan, this move will “foster the conservation legacy of the historical site.”
In opposition to the DCNR’s decision to end the lease, the Quincy Township Board of Supervisors formally allied with the South Mountain Golf Course. This move would see the lease terminated at the end of the current 10-year term in 2026.
The supervisors firmly stand with the South Mountain Golf Course, calling for an immediate renewal of the lease. They acknowledge the historical, environmental, and recreational value that the golf course brings to Quincy Township, where it is located.
A public meeting to discuss the issue will be held at the South Mountain Fish and Game Club on Wednesday, Oct 18. The golf course will close early that day to allow staff to attend.
Reason for DCNR’s Selection of South Mountain Golf Course
The South Mountain Golf Course was shortlisted along with eight other sites for the new resource management center by the DCNR. Several sites in Caledonia State Park, north of the golf course, were also considered.
The state argues that the land could be put to better use by expanding outdoor recreational opportunities rather than catering to an activity that is widely available in the area.
The state forest, according to the DCNR, has been under increased pressure due to heightened visitation and heightened expectations. This has led to an increased demand for improved administrative efficiencies to manage both the ecological and anthropocentric needs of the forest.
Quincy Township’s Stand on the Issue
Quincy Township argues that the property’s legacy supports the preservation of the golf course. They emphasize the importance of maintaining the integrity and character of the area surrounding the South Mountain Golf Course.
Historical Significance of South Mountain Golf Course
According to Quincy Township, the land on which the golf course currently sits was first surveyed in 1750. The state previously used the land as a farm to feed patients at the state’s tuberculosis treatment center.
The golf course was established in 1921 by doctors at the South Mountain Sanatorium to provide outdoor therapy for patients. The property was leased to a private owner in 1968 to provide a popular recreation opportunity to residents.
Previous Attempts to Close the Golf Course
The DCNR initiated discussions to close the golf course in 2012, while considering alternatives to potentially relocate a target range that had closed two years prior. However, the decision was put on hold at the end of the lease term in 2015 as the timing was not deemed right to proceed with the target range and other work at that time.
