Chandler Phillips delivered an impressive final-round performance, carding a 2-under 69 to clinch a tie for third place alongside Mackenzie Hughes at the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort. Despite his success on the course, Phillips found himself grappling with the aftermath of an unfortunate incident involving spectators.
Impact on Concentration
Following an errant tee shot that struck two spectators, Phillips shared his emotional response to the incident. Expressing deep concern for those affected, he admitted that the event had a significant impact on his mental state.
Reflecting on the experience, Phillips revealed, “Tell you the truth, after 8, I was kind of, I don’t know, man, I hit somebody, or, I hit actually two people, and the lady that I hit didn’t look too good. So, after that, I wasn’t right.”
Performance on the Course
Despite the unsettling turn of events, Phillips showcased his skill and composure throughout the tournament. Starting strong with an eagle at the first hole, he maintained a competitive position, even securing a birdie at No. 14 to reach 10 under par. However, a bogey at the challenging No. 16 hole proved to be a pivotal moment in his performance.
NBC commentator Curt Byrum acknowledged Phillips’ maturity on the course, noting that he didn’t exhibit typical rookie nerves. Nevertheless, Phillips admitted that the incident with the spectators had a profound effect on his focus and concentration.
Looking Ahead to Houston
With his sights set on the upcoming PGA Tour event in Houston, Phillips, a former Texas A&M college golfer, anticipates strong support from friends and family in attendance.
Phillips humorously remarked, “Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if some of my friends get kicked out. They’re pretty rowdy.” He added that his mother, known for her enthusiastic support, will undoubtedly make her presence known.
Describing his mother’s vocal nature, Phillips shared, “You damn sure will be able to hear my mom, because she don’t even call me by my name, she calls me by my nickname.” And that nickname? Goose.
Expressing excitement for the upcoming tournament and the prospect of hearing his mother’s distinctive cheers, Phillips looks forward to the camaraderie and encouragement from his loved ones.
