A Historic Golf Course Transformation
The Carey Park Golf Course in Hutchinson, Kansas, has embarked on an ambitious revitalization plan that has been in progress for over two decades. This master plan, initiated in 2003, is now entering its final stages, with the next phase set to be completed by 2024. Led by Superintendent Matt Miller, the project has already seen the completion of five phases since its inception in 2009.
An Origin Story
Prior to 1928, public golf courses in Hutchinson were scattered and disorganized. It was in this year that the vision for a golf course in Carey Park began to take shape. The Carey Park Municipal Golf Course was officially established in 1928. In 1933, park superintendent Ralph McCarroll and Emerson Carey Jr. collaborated to upgrade the course, resulting in the construction of a clubhouse on the South Loop.
A Journey of Progress
Over the years, the Carey Park Golf Course has witnessed significant transformations. In 1949, the old Carey Lakes Golf Course clubhouse was generously donated to the city by the Carey family. The clubhouse was relocated to the Carey Park Municipal Course, specifically the north loop, to accommodate the construction of a flood control levee. In 1987, the old clubhouse was replaced by a gazebo setup designed by Tom Heintzman.
Continuing the Transformation
The latest phase of the revitalization plan kicked off this fall with the removal of park equipment located at 30 Emerson Loop, southwest of the golf course. This phase aims to replace the aging main irrigation lines, which are between 60 and 70 years old, as well as upgrade the sprinkler heads and lateral lines that are over 40 years old.
Enhancing the Golfing Experience
While the irrigation system upgrade is a crucial improvement, the project also includes expanding the facilities to enhance the overall golfing experience. By utilizing the existing park restroom facility, golfers will now have access to a restroom every three to four holes along the course. Additionally, water coolers will be installed to provide refreshment to players. This expansion serves multiple purposes, including deterring vandalism, ensuring the safety of children, and offering convenience to golfers.
Looking Ahead
Despite the ongoing improvements, the Carey Park Golf Course will maintain its 18-hole layout. However, there is a possibility of adjusting the length of certain holes based on the agreed-upon concept. These changes will not only breathe new life into the course but also provide golf enthusiasts with exciting new challenges to conquer.
The revitalization of the Carey Park Golf Course is a testament to the dedication and vision of the Hutchinson City Council, as well as the golfing community. It is a project that honors the history of the course while embracing the future of the sport. With each completed phase, the transformation becomes more apparent, solidifying the course’s position as a premier golfing destination.
