Rory McIlroy was questioned by reporters at the FedEx St. Jude Championship about whether the FedEx Cup is the most difficult trophy in golf. This was an unsubtle reference made to a statement made Tuesday by LIV Golf’s lawyer to temporarily halt three defectors from the Saudi-backed renegade tour in order to allow them to participate in the FedEx Cup Playoffs. (The motion was denied).
McIlroy responded with a tongue-in-cheek reply. McIlroy replied, “Is it the most difficult trophy to win in football?”
The playoff qualifiers have been narrowed down to the top 125 players in the point standings by 44 events. This week, the FedEx Cup Playoffs will begin at TPC Southwind in Memphis. McIlroy is the week’s No. 6. He agreed that the FedEx Cup was not a bargain.

McIlroy stated that it was a strange one. It’s like playing consistently good golf for a season, then getting hot again at the end. It’s not easy to win. No one has won more than once.”

McIlroy is being chased by the rest of his field. McIlroy and the rest of the field are chasing world No. 1. Scottie Scheffler has won four times this year, including at the Masters. He holds a substantial lead.
Justin Thomas stated, “He’s had the best season of all time.” “It’s the best money ever earned, and (leading) FedEx Cup by a mile.
Scheffler was awarded a $4 million bonus from Comcast Business Tour Top 10 in recognition of his top spot in FedEx Cup standings at end to the regular season. He also received a $1,000,000 bonus for winning Aon Risk Reward Challenge. These bonuses don’t count towards Scheffler’s $13,176 910 million official money sum. This is the biggest single-season Tour history bonus. His 3,556 FedEx Cup points in the regular season was second highest since 2009, when the points format was changed. The most was 4,169 points by Jordan Spieth during the 2014-15 season. Scheffler can also earn $18 million more in bonus money if the FedEx Cup is won. However, points for a win are quadrupled in playoffs to 2,000 points. This could mean that Scheffler’s lead could be at risk. In a staggered start, the leader in the Tour Championship has a two-stroke advantage over his nearest competitor.
It feels like I’ve been leading for quite some time. Scheffler stated that I have a large lead and am up by about 1,200 points. If I don’t play well this week, a win would allow me to pass them. “But, I still have an impressive lead despite the fact that the Playoffs points are magnified now, so if my golf continues to be good I should have a lead heading into East Lake (site for the Tour Championship), which would be a great position.
Scheffler will be making his third appearance at the FedEx Cup Playoffs. Scheffler has advanced to the Tour Championship in both of his first two seasons (No. Scheffler will be making his third appearance in the FedEx Cup Playoffs. He stated that “nothing’s going to change” for him. “I’m trying to get out there, have a good start, and be in position to win the tournament,” he said.
Thomas, who won in 2017 the FedEx Cup during a record five-win season brings back fond memories to TPC Southwind. He won the 2020 WGC St. Jude Invitational at the 7,243-yard par-70 layout. He’s now eighth in the FedEx Cup points standings and has added a second PGA Championship title.
Justin Thomas accepts his trophy after winning Sunday’s WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational, TPC Southwind. His final score was 13 under.
“I cannot believe how quickly it has gone. Thomas stated that we are already in the Playoffs, and there are only three weeks until the end of the season. “I feel like I have a great chance these last three weeks, to make it a great season.
Scheffler’s season was a huge success, win or not. He’s now taking a “if it isn’t broke don’t fix it” approach to the playoffs.
“It’s fun, I like being No. He said, “It’s fun, I like to be No.1 in the world. I enjoy being at the top FedEx Cup.” “Those are things I enjoy, it’s fun, so I want just to keep improving on them.”
