Thomas Detry (+275 to be a Top 20)… Taylor Montgomery (also in the Power Rankings for The American Express) would have been the first Rookie of Year. Both talents are leading their 28-member class right now, though Montgomery holds a slight advantage. Detry has been juggling his obligations on the DP World Tour but it hasn’t slowed down his game on PGA TOUR, where he’s 5-for-5 and a runner up finish in Bermuda. This highlights four top 15s. Callum Tarren (+450 to a Top 20)…. Alex, I’ll take “What a difference a year makes” for $400. The Englishman said that it actually makes it more valuable. This is a striking context. He was 0-for-6 in the season’s first PGA TOUR rookie event at The American Express, a year after he missed the cut. The misery would continue for eight more unsuccessful attempts before he finally ended the drought on Korn Ferry Tour. You know the rest of his story about how he rallied to qualify for FedExCup Playoffs. Although he is only 3-for-7 this season, the 32-year old has made it count with a T13 in Mississippi as well as a T2 at Sea Island. He’s not afraid, but he is most definitely fearless today. This is the right approach for every shootout. Joel Dahmen… It’s possible that something will happen, and it’s likely to his track record. He’s making his fourth appearance, but he has yet to cash regardless how many rounds he played to reach the cut. He stoked up the heater in the fall, and scored three straight top 10s out of five top 20s. Although it has been a while, the lean has returned to form and he wouldn’t have let the holidays pass him by. His default skill is that of a ball-striker, who requires timely putting to make the work pay. Patrick Rodgers… It is a coin flip which one was more surprising: that he committed for the Sony Open in Hawaii, where he’s only 1-for-4 with T38 in his last appearance in 2020 or that he withdrew before the tournament began. He hasn’t been out of town early before, but this was his only chance to compete in the FedExCup. The timing of the decision was not typical. Given his 7-for-7 win, which included a T3 among four top 20, it was not surprising that conventional wisdom suggested that he would not wait to return to the fireworks show. He’s set to make a personal record at PGA WEST, where he has cashed three out of four times, but not better than last year’s T40. Martin Laird… Sometimes, the lack of recent success can discourage shrewd planning. The Scot has missed just one issue of The American Express since he joined the PGA TOUR in 2008. He withdrew from the tournament last year after the commitment deadline, and before the first round. Only one top 10 was his T9 in 2017, which is one of five top 25, but he’s only 1-for-4 since then with a T47 for 2021. He is not to be ignored. Comfort is more important than inconsistency in execution. His success at other desert layouts such as TPC Scottsdale and TPC Summerlin (in his backyard) is also evident. The career bell curve is something that can’t be avoided. At 40 years old, success is expected to happen with less frequency. He ended 2022 with a pair top 25s. You might consider investing in fractions of a unit in Top 30 or Top 40 markets, or going bigger in a matchup. The odds were sourced Tuesday, January 17, 2023. For live odds, visit BetMGM.
