Freddie Couples are great golfers who swing with a lazy wrist. Although you might not notice the lazy motion in the takeaway, powerful golfers use their “lazy wrist” to lead their downswings with the club’s butt end. By adding rhythm and lag to their swings, they automatically increase their power.
You will be amazed at how much you can swing if your swing is not as rigid and fast-paced as you used to be. You can relax and have your wrists do all the work.
Freddie Couples was a golfer I mentioned that has a swing in which he starts his downswing with his butt end, while his driver or iron seems to add wrist lag at his top. His swing isn’t rushed, but his motion is opposite to casting.
Your power is lost most when you cast at the top of your swing. “Release” at the bottom of your swing will increase head speed and create more distance during impact.
Freddie Couples loads his lag at the top of his swing (with lazy wrists for whipping action).
Danny Maude has recently demonstrated what I call “Lazy Wrist Action”. is a weak wrist takeaway that resembles a waggle. Your hands move in the same way as a waggle, but in the opposite direction to the head of your club. He lets his hands reach the top of his swing and passes the clubhead. Then he starts to pull down on his butt end and begins his forward hip press. Do this while exaggerating the lag at top. Feel your wrists pull the butt end down.
You can practice waggling your club by waving your hands. However, this won’t be a good idea for your swing. Swing to the top, and then let your “lazy” wrists add lag as you pull down using the butt of the club. As you begin your downswing, feel the sensation of your loose wrists creating lag.
When you hear the whooshing sound and whip the clubhead through the impact zone, you will know the butt of the club is driving your swing.
Your power should be used to release your wrists at bottom of your swing. Slowly learn the “lazy wrist” feeling and speed up your swing to experience the power of a stronger swing. Practice your straight leading arm swing using GOLFSTR+. Get one now at www.GOLFSTR.com
Thoughts of the Day: The pro shop’s name comes from the fact you have to be a professional golfer in order to purchase anything there.
