Rory McIlroy defended a title at the PGA TOUR for the second time in his professional career. McIlroy won the THE CJ CUP at South Carolina at Congaree Golf Club by one stroke. McIlroy earned $1.89 Million and 500 FedExCup Points. RELATED: Full FedExCup standings. Coincidentally both McIlroy’s title defenses were on different courses. The Summit Club in Las Vegas hosted last year’s edition OF THE CJ CUP. Because of the pandemic, his other back-toback titles were spread over three years at The RBC Canadian Open. He won the Hamilton Golf & Country Club title in 2019. In June 2019, he won at St. George’s G&CC. McIlroy’s 23rd win on the PGA TOUR was Sunday. In each of the six previous seasons, McIlroy has won at least one of his 14 memberships. He won his last win in the TOUR Championship’s last start. This is also the fourth consecutive victory on TOUR. It bridges seasons. McIlroy was the favourite at BetMGM, despite the presence of Scottie Scheffler (+900), Justin Thomas (+1600), Justin Thomas (+2200), and Jon Rahm (+900). He was at +700. He’ll be returning to the top of the Official World Golf Ranking, his ninth career victory and the first since July 2nd 2020. McIlroy finished bogey-bogey but it became increasingly clear that he would finish in second place after he had made four birdies on the five-hole stretch through 16th hole. It was won by Kurt Kitayama who, like McIlroy signed for 1-under-67. Kitayama received $1.134million and 300 FedExCup points. Kitayama’s third runner up finish in 27 starts as TOUR member, and his third in his last 14. He opened the week at +0000, as an outright at BetMGM.
