Golf Course in Sherwood Park, Alberta
The Northern Bear Golf Course, located in Sherwood Park, Alberta, is home to one of only three Jack Nicklaus Signature Courses in Canada. The course has recently made a deal to host the PGA Tour Americas event until 2025. Unfortunately, the iconic clubhouse at the course caught fire on a Saturday morning, resulting in significant damage.
Firefighters Battling Extreme Conditions
Firefighters were faced with extreme conditions while battling the blaze at the clubhouse. The temperatures were as low as 40 below, making it a challenging situation for the emergency responders. Despite the freezing temperatures, numerous emergency vehicles were sent to the scene after neighbors reported seeing billowing smoke.
Challenges Due to Freezing Temperatures
The freezing temperatures presented additional challenges for the firefighters on-site. The frozen pump ports and lines made it difficult to combat the fire effectively. Dana Terry, the deputy chief of operations for Strathcona County’s emergency services department, stated that the gusts of wind added to the already low wind chill, further complicating the firefighting efforts.
Northern Bear Golf Course Features
The Northern Bear Golf Course is renowned for its long fairways, tree-lined paths, five lakes, and large greens. It is considered one of the longest courses on the PGA Tour Americas schedule. The upcoming ATB Classic, scheduled for June 27-30, was set to take place at this picturesque location.
No Injuries, but Total Loss
Fortunately, there were no injuries reported as a result of the fire. However, the clubhouse is now considered a total loss, with only the skeletal remains standing in the harsh Alberta cold. The temperatures in the region are not expected to rise above zero Fahrenheit until Friday, making it challenging for any potential recovery or rebuilding efforts.
Gratitude and the Promise to Rebuild
The Northern Bear Golf Course expressed their gratitude to the fire department and emergency crews who fought the fire under such treacherous weather conditions. They also reassured their supporters that they are determined to rebuild the clubhouse even better than before. A message on the club’s Facebook page conveyed their devastation over the loss of the beautiful clubhouse and their commitment to recovery.
