Wyndham Clark, in pursuit of Bryson DeChambeau at the 2024 Masters, showcased his skills with a 1-over 73 in his debut round at Augusta National Golf Club.
Clark’s Perspective on LIV Golf and Chances to Catch Up
When questioned about the substantial 8-shot gap between him and the current leader, Bryson DeChambeau, who is associated with LIV Golf, Clark remained optimistic. Despite the deficit, he expressed confidence in his ability to narrow the margin over the course of the tournament.
“We’ve got 54 holes,” emphasized the U.S. Open champion. “In LIV Golf, they only play 54, so I like my chances.”
Performance Highlights and Areas for Improvement
Clark started strongly by scoring 3 under on his first nine holes but faced challenges on the back nine. He encountered setbacks with bogeys on holes 11 and 18, and struggled with a 7-shot effort on the par-5 15th.
Reflecting on his performance, Clark remarked, “If I played the par 5s a little better, and maybe make one or two putts, we’d be having a different interview right now.” He acknowledged the need to enhance his putting skills and tighten up his game on par 5s.
Analysis of Clark’s Play on Key Holes
Despite his overall performance, Clark faced challenges on Augusta National’s easiest holes, shooting 2-over on the four most favorable ones. Notably, he managed pars on holes 2, 8, and 13 but encountered difficulties, including finding the water on hole 15 and a 3-putt for par on hole 8.
Addressing his performance on these crucial holes, Clark identified room for improvement, stating, “You play that 2-under, it’s a totally different round.”
Challenging Conditions and Adaptation on the Course
Clark, a first-timer at the Masters, navigated through challenging weather conditions during the tournament. Despite practicing in ideal weather leading up to the event, he faced gusts of up to 30 miles per hour during his round.
Sharing insights on the challenging conditions, Clark highlighted the impact of strong winds on putting, mentioning, “It’s really hard to make putts when it’s blowing 20 and gusting. You’re trying to time the putt with the gusts.”
Clark’s playing partners, Viktor Hovland and Cameron Smith, managed to outperform par with scores of 71, showcasing strong performances alongside the determined golfer.
