PEBBLE BEACH (Calif.) — Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has been added to the Wall of Champions at Pebble Beach. He joins a long list of Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, and Arnold Palmer. Justin Rose would be thrilled to receive a plaque at Pebble for his win in the PGA TOUR event. Rose’s third round was halted by strong winds that blew his golf ball across the fairway. Rose returned to Monterey Peninsula Sunday morning and played 10 holes in 6 over for a 65, giving him a one-shot lead at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Only professionals were allowed to play in the final round, which was scheduled to begin Sunday afternoon. The tournament was not due to end until Monday. Rodgers of Canada and Ben Silverman of Canada were the only champions to be crowned on Sunday. They held on for a narrow victory in the pro am portion of the tournament. Their name will be listed on the wall. It includes pro-am winners and tournament winners as well as USGA champions at Pebble. Rodgers, whose Packers failed in the NFL playoffs for the fourth time in 15 years of being the starter, said that it was “really significant”. It’s been on my bucket-list since childhood. Rodgers did his fair share of the heavy lifting. Silverman, fresh from a Korn Ferry Tour victory, was at 1-over 221 and missed the cut. Rodgers played off a 10 handicap and said that he hadn’t played since training camp. They finished at 26-under, one shot ahead Peter Malnati and Don Colleran (retired president and CEO FedEx), whose names are already on the wall. Four behind were Keith Mitchell and Josh Allen, the Buffalo Bills’ quarterback. The weather was not an issue, and the top 25 pro-am teams would still have played Sunday afternoon. Rodgers stated that Josh Allen had told him there would be an “asterisk” after this win, as there were only three rounds. “But I believe our names will be up there for quite some time,” Rodgers said. After a wild week, everyone is now on the same course at Pebble Beach under roughly the same conditions. Because it will be played over two consecutive days, it still feels like a marathon rather than a sprint. Rose was just happy to be there. Rose is now at 54 holes, his first lead since winning at Torrey Pines four year ago. However, his form has been trending upwards towards the end of last season and into 2023. He was at 12-under-203. Rose stated that the morning was perfect. Rose’s 10 holes were punctuated with an eagle on 16th par-5. The third round was completed in three hours. There was wind, rain, hail, then sunshine over at Monterey Peninsula. Malnati scored a 67 at Pebble after avoiding the holes that were most exposed to wind on Saturday. Kurt Kitayama was able to score a 70 at Spyglass Hill. They were just one shot behind. Mitchell’s pitch across a bunker at Pebble and across the 18th Green at Pebble was too fast. Rose would have tied him if the ball had not been dropped. He missed the shot to equal Rose’s 70. Instead, the ball settled at 7 feet and he missed it. Rose was right in the middle Saturday of the stoppage. Rose, a former U.S. Open champion, had to hit 5-wood to reach the ninth hole. The ninth hole slants towards the ocean without anything blocking the wind. It was a stunning shot of 3 feet. He said that a gust knocked his ball seven feet from the green before he could mark it. Officials suspended play on all three courses. The wind was not as bad on Spyglass Hill, which is tree-lined. Rose returned to the No. 9 hole and made the birdie putt. Rose returned and holed the birdie putt on No. 9 and was on his own. Viktor Hovland was one of eight players within three shots of the leader. Although he’s only playing this tournament for the first, his previous two trips to Pebble were successful. He won the U.S. Open. He was an amateur in 2018, and a low amateur at the U.S. Open 2019. The apparel was the main difference between then-and-now. Three layers of clothing were unnecessary, and you could wear a wool cap in August or June.
