PEBBLE BAY, Calif. — Justin Rose was an imposing presence in a day with weather changing by the minute. He played 19 holes in 9-under and left the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am on Sunday with a lead of two shots. Rose, 42 years old, was poised to win the wind-delayed final round Monday morning. Rose was at 15-under through nine holes, his shot in the 10th fairway was safe. The final round was stopped when the sun began to dip behind the Pacific horizon. To climb into contention, Denny McCarthy shot 29 on the Pebble Beach front nine to finish six shots behind. He decided to play the 16th hole and hit his approach from 15 feet. After that, he marked his ball and stopped for the night. He was 13-under par with Brendon, Todd (12 holes), and Peter Malnati (who was in the last group with Rose). Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers, along with Ben Silverman from Canada, was Sunday’s only winner. Due to wind and weather delays, the pro am was reduced to 54 holes. Only professionals were left for the final round. Silverman and Rodgers won by one shot. His name will be on the Wall of Champions, in front of the Pebble Beach first tee. This Rodgers described as a “bucket-list” item. Rose would love to be on an adjacent plaque honoring tournament winners. Rose was in the middle of the pack on Sunday when he returned from Monterey Peninsula to play the third round. Officials had to stop play on Saturday because his golf ball was blowing 4 feet off the ninth green. Rose had hit 5-wood from 7 feet to 7 on Saturday. Rose made the 7-foot putt on Sunday morning and was well on his way. He played 10 holes in 6 under for an impressive 66, giving him a one shot lead. Rose made a slow start to his final round, with a bogey on the first hole and par through some of most of the scorable areas of the front nine. He then drilled a long-iron from the fairway bunker to 8 feet on the par-5 sixth hole to make eagle. Rose followed that up with an 18-foot birdie on the seventh hole to increase his lead. The third round of the morning was completed in three hours. Sunday saw wind, rain and briefly some hail. In a matter of fifteen minutes, players had gone from seeing shadows to umbrellas by late afternoon. Depending on the wind, Monday could be Rose’s most difficult stretch. The final stretch of holes is the most challenging, if the forecast holds true (which is a big if at Pebble). Sixteen of the last seven holes ranked among the top eight most difficult for the final round. Canada’s Taylor Pendrith was one of the 20 players who finished. He was 31 years old and shot bogey-free for 64, which was good enough to finish at 12-under 275. Rose was three shots behind, but it was worth staying to see the story unfold. Rodgers also did his fair share of the heavy lifting. Silverman, fresh from a Korn Ferry Tour victory, was at 1-over 221 and missed the cut. Rodgers played off a 10 handicap and said that he hadn’t played since training camp. They finished at 26 under par. Four of them were behind, including Keith Mitchell and Josh Allen, the Buffalo Bills’ quarterback. The weather was not an issue, and the top 25 pro-am teams would still have played Sunday afternoon. Rodgers stated that Josh Allen had told him there would be an “asterisk” after this win, as there were only three rounds. “But I believe our names will be up there for quite a while.”
