Many of us go to the golf course when we want to escape the 9-to-5 grind. Cam Davis is a professional golfer who made his mark last week as part of the International Presidents Cup team. How does he get out of the job? Davis discovered disc golf after missing the cut at a Korn Ferry Tour tournament. He discovered a course on the property and decided to give it a try. Davis’s Presidents Cup debut at Quail hollow saw him posting a 2-3-0 record. It was only late last year that he really took to his new hobby. Andrew Tschudin, his caddie, bought him a set of discs. They play often on the road. Davis says, “I was looking to find a hobby that would get me out of my hotel room during long afternoons or long mornings on the golf course and I don’t have any other activities to do.” It just kind of evolved from that to try and find a local course every time we travel. It’s a relaxing, enjoyable outdoor activity. I’m not trying get professional status with it. Just enjoy it. Davis was just finishing a round with his caddie at Harbour Town Golf Links, Hilton Head, South Carolina, when he agreed to do the interview. The Australian 27-year old enjoys the camaraderie that his new hobby brings. The Sydney native explained that disc golf to him is like regular golf to many people. “It’s a great way to have fun with friends and also it’s very quick.” Davis watched YouTube videos to learn more about disc golf. According to Wikipedia, disc golf is played in over three dozen countries and there are more then 90,000 members of the Professional Disc Golfers Association. Davis says the discs look similar to Frisbees but are smaller and more sleek. Some fly straight, while others curve more. Some people prefer distance. Some work better close up. Davis states that it is similar to playing golf. “It’s similar to golf in that it works a bit, but it’s still different enough so it doesn’t feel like work.” Disc golf was born in 1960 when the targets were usually trash cans and trees. The discs are now thrown at baskets made from chains, and there are usually nine to 18 courses. There are over 10,000 courses around the world, with 75 percent of them in the United States. Davis states that if it hits the chains it will drop into a basket. “… It makes a lot of noise so you can see it hitting the basket. Davis won the 2921 Rocket Mortgage Classic in five-hole playoff. He says it is important to first get the distance down. This will allow a player to learn how to move the disc in different directions. This is crucial since it often requires you to navigate through trees. Davis says, “Once it is thrown far enough, it’s possible to curve it in any direction you like.” It gives you more opportunity to play a course. Davis’s phone has an app that shows him the location of courses and lets him keep track of his scores if he so chooses. He claims he doesn’t want to compete with anyone, but he wants to have fun and clear his mind. Davis states that he enjoys the game to improve his skills. “… “It’s just a small enjoyment, just trying my best score and just going around and treating it like I treated golf as an amateur to really just enjoy doing creative stuff. It’s not the part where he sits in a hotel room and twiddling his fingers that is the best part.
