Jon Rahm continues his quest to win three consecutive PGA TOUR wins. His 6-under 66 in round three of the Farmers Insurance Open saw him move to second, two behind Sam Ryder. Ryder is currently at 12-under, while Rahm at 10-under is chasing his first TOUR victory. The winner last year, Luke List, came in fifth place in the final round. This week, five more contenders feel confident. You’re in for a nervous end, whether you took the triple-figure odds on Ryder pretournament or jumped all-in on Rahm as the heavy pretournament favorite. Let’s take an in-depth look at BetMGM Sportsbook’s top players and see if they have the chance to win the Torrey trophy. JON RAHM (-10, 2nd (+125 for win) Case For Rahm won Farmers Insurance in 2017 as well as the U.S. Open in Torrey Pines 2021. His four Farmers results were T5-2-T7–T3. He has also won both of his PGA TOUR starts, and four out of six worldwide. This week, he ranks ninth in Strokes Gained. Off-the-Tee is crucial when the ball must be kept in play through Torrey’s rough. Rahm stated Friday that he has won his last two tournaments so there is no reason to doubt that he can win it again. “I have been swinging it beautifully this week, so hopefully tomorrow it will get better and better. Case Against: It’s not easy to find one. Let’s not forget to nitpick. Rahm has lost nearly a stroke (-0.8277) to the field in his first round on the South Course this week. If Rahm finds himself missing the putting surfaces while approaching, things could get a bit dicey. It’s rare to win three consecutive starts on TOUR these days. This has only happened twice in the past decade. SAM RYDER (12, 1st (+275 for win) Case For : He’s the leader. It’s a good start. Ryder is a calm player with only two bogeys in his three rounds. He’s also gained more than four strokes (4.092) with his approach play. Ryder ranks first in the field with a score of 9/10 when he struggles to get out of tough spots. Ryder stated Friday that he doesn’t believe he has many weaknesses in his game. “I don’t really want to control it. I’m trying to accept it and enjoy it because that is ultimately what we want.” “That’s why you play.” Case Against Ryder has yet to win on TOUR, and he will be playing with the Torrey T-Rex at Rahm in round three – as scary as it may get. He has only one top 10 in his five previous attempts at Torrey (T10, 2021), and an 80 on the South Course last year. He’s only two-under on the South Course and his second round of 68 is his lowest ever. TONY FINAU -8, 3rd (+650 for win) Case For Finau is enjoying a great round, playing his last 30 holes at 11 under, after appearing to be headed for the cut. To survive round two, Finau gained three strokes and put up the round with an 8-under 64 on Friday. Ranks third on SG. Approach, eighth on SG. Off-the-Tee, and 18th on SG. Around the Green. There are seven Top-25s at Torrey. Four of them are Top-10s. Case Against Finau is 65th in SG – Putting this week, despite his brilliant round on Friday. When the tournament is on the line, one can’t afford to miss any. He claims that he has it under control. Finau said that the first couple days of the putter were quite cold. He was not comfortable with it. But he made some adjustments to his setup and it is much better today. It was obvious with the putts I made from a short distance. “I’ve hit it really well all three days, I just capitalized upon putts par saves and birdie puts that I really needed today.” Case For: Morikawa, who is hungry after his devastating loss to Rahm at The Sentry Tournament of Champions, believes he can rebound. He is first in the field for SG: Approach, and 10th for SG: Off the Tee. He was T4 at U.S. Open Torrey 2021. He said, “If I put together 18 great holes, we could get right there.” Concerning: He has lost more than two shots to the field putting (-2.391), to be ranked at 68th. Given what we saw in Maui, can his new chipping style and putter withstand the pressure? “Putting has felt kind of like that. It’s been all over the place. It hasn’t felt great but it hasn’t been terrible,” Morikawa said. MAX HOMA (7), T4 (+1600 for win) Case For. Homa wants to get another win in California, to go along with his two Fortinet Championships as well as his Genesis Invitational. He is ranked second in SG Approach this week, and is often one of the best poa putters. Homa stated that if he plays the same way as today and makes some putts, he will be fine. He is very satisfied with his golf game and needs to just keep doing what he’s doing and be patient. Homa missed four cut in six Farmers Insurance Open attempts. His two rounds around Torrey South’s front nine have been played in five over, but he is two under on the back nine, with only two birdies. In the final round, it’s likely that the winner will have to make back nine moves. * For more information, visit BetMGM.com. To wager, you must be 21 years old or older.
