SAN DIEGO — Jon Rahm climbed up the leaderboard at his favorite course with a 6-under 66 Friday. This is Torrey Pines’ moving day and Rahm pulled within two shots of Sam Ryder, who was leading after the third round Farmers Insurance Open. Rahm is ranked No. Rahm, ranked No. 3 in the world is just 18 holes away of winning his third consecutive start and potentially taking over as No. For the first time since 20 March, he is at 1. After a par-5 ninth hole eagle, he moved to second place. This was his second consecutive stretch of four holes under par. Ryder shot 72 on a beautiful, calm day at the municipal course overlooking Pacific Ocean. He missed a 10-foot birdie on the par-5 18. Ryder was 12-under 204 after 54 holes, while Rahm was 10-under. Tony Finau was 12 shots behind when he began his third round on back nine. He shot 4-under 32 before hitting his approach shot from 138 yards on par-4’s first hole. To move up to third, he shot an 8-under 64. This was his best round on the South Course. Sungjae Im was No. 18 for a 67, and was five shots behind Collin Morikawa (70), Max Homa (71) or Sahith Theegala (71). To avoid the NFL’s conference championship games, the tournament was played from Wednesday through Saturday for the past two years. Rahm has had an adventurous three days at Torrey Pines. He won his first PGA TOUR win in 2017, and then won the U.S. Open 2021, his first major. Rahm stated that Torrey Pines is his favorite venue, “before I ever did any thing.” This is a beautiful golf course. It suits my strengths, and I believe because I love it so much, I have done well here. After playing the South Course’s opening round, Rahm finished tied for 116th at 1-over-73. With five holes remaining on his second round at Santa Ana winds’ North Course, Rahm was just one short of the cut line. He then made an eagle on Thursday and then three consecutive birdies. His last 23 holes were played in 11 under. He played the South Course’s front nine in 5-under 31 thanks to three consecutive birdies, and then the eagle on Friday. His second shot on the ninth, which he hit from 289 yards, was “contestant for best shot of this year.” Although I had hoped to hit it on the center, I actually tattooed the 5-wood, and ended up with 10 feet for eagle. This is something you wouldn’t expect on a back pin. But I put myself in a great position and made the putt. Rahm said, “I’m an aggressive player by nature, so it doesn’t really change.” Rahm won the Sentry Tournament of Champions at Kapalua last weekend and The American Express in Coachella Valley last week. “I just try to stay true to myself and the difference in the four holes between the Sentry Tournament of Champions at Kapalua and the American Express in the Coachella Valley was simply making better swings at a good time. Rahm is aiming for his 10th PGA TOUR win. Ryder, 33 years old, is aiming for his first PGA TOUR victory. Rahm stated, “I’m quite calm, honestly.” Rahm said, “Yes, there is pressure for obvious things but I have won my last two tournaments so I have every reason to believe I can do it again.” It’s been a great week. I have been hitting it well all week. Tomorrow, I will be able to do the things that need to be done. After the first round Ryder was tied with two other players and led by three strokes at 36 holes. He said, “Today it is just a different degree of pressure.” “I didn’t feel pressured to make things happen, press or try, so I didn’t panic when I made a double bogey on 2. I just adjusted to the round, and got a feel for my swing and game. I was pretty happy with the way the day ended.
